hi ghosthug

In linguistics, low ambiguity tolerance is an inability to feel at ease when not comprehending communication. For example, when you are learning a foreign language, can you endure being submerged in the language even though you might not understand every word nor comprehend every situation around you? Some people thrive on this while others hate it - no right or wrong answer, of course - just personality types.

However, I mean the term in a more general sense - do you need to understand everything around you and to feel in control of every situation in your life, or do you enjoy having the feeling that there is more to the things than you have so far unravelled - a feeling of not being in control of everything? This freaks some people out, while without it others can become bored and restless.

so, do you need to be in control of every situation in your life?.... conversing

hi guiri wave

hhmm never heard of it before learnt something new yay: mmmm...well vis a vis languages i cant say cos i am bad at them ....my french and italian are very poor and i always feel frustrated when i try and talk in the languages and the listener i am sure just wants to laugh and laugh moping

in the rest of my life ..well one thing i know for sure i am not in complete control of any area of my life and i there are tons of things in most of areas fo my life that i dont understand.. that i only have limited knowledge of ..and in which i have to take decisions often based on gut or instinct rather than full knowledge ......do i enjoy living in this haze ..hmm i regard it as inevitable ...there are times when i wish i was more in control and more knowledgable ..there are other times when i enjoy the feeling of incertitude..and a vista of the unknown.......

but no i dont think i am a control freak...i am too laid back for that and value freedom to much to attempt to limit anyone elses......

having said all this ...living in a haze of confusion i might have got it all wrong
yay yay :peace

How about you then?????

In my role as language teacher, I see in a person's eyes how tolerant she or he is to ambiguity.. and I know how hostile it can make a person react....I also sense it at times when I am speaking Italian in my everyday life and not coming across as clearly as I would like. The person to whom I am talking might think I am saying unkind things...happened just yesterday in the post office, for example..So I understand the reluctance to accept ambiguity..

I actually usually like the feeling ... which is just as well because I have lived in a few foreign countries and so it is to some extent inevitable. It would be interesting to hear more views from people living in a non-native culture. What do you find difficult regarding any ambiguity connected to your situation?

I am not really talking about being a control freak...I see that as a psychological disorder, while having a low tolerance for ambiguity is just part of a person's nature.

I think I experienced some LAT this week. A lot on other peoples reactions, and a bit of my own!

I was looking for 2 people to witness my signature on a document. Do you think I could find anyone with an understanding of the term "witness"? .. NO. Everyone I approached wanted to know exactly WHAT the document was about. I told them it was a confidential document - nothing to do with them - that I merely needed an upright sane human being to put their "mark" to verify that they had seen me sign the document.

In one instance I explained what the document was, and they said they did not agree with the document so they would not sign it.....doh

In another instance I got the bobbing head/shaking head/fear in the eyes expression and did a graceful exit.uh oh

I returned home, dumbfounded that people here had no comprehension of this simple facet of life! Does this mean that if they had to witness an accident that they would refuse to bear witness to what they saw?

Then! .. I finally found an intelligent humanoid - someone who had travelled the globe, had a university education - and could comprehend the simplicity of the function of bearing Witness to a Signature! What a relief to find a spark of intelligence!

Do I have "low LAT"? I dunno. I just know that I lose patience with ignorant types.

No, I think you suffer from the perfectly understandable OTHER 'disorder',

LTS syndrome.
