immanuelle: I have a performance tomorrow, not a biggie...but am accompanying a group of 5 to 11 year old munchkins on the piano for a Christmas concert. Although I have been playing for a long time, I still always feel physically sick when I have to perform in front of a group. I enjoy it, but get quite nervous still. How do you overcome stage fright? Do you do anything special to relax yourself? Would appreciate any input. Thanks.
A double scotch before stepping on stage does wonders!! Best of luck, darlin!!
immanuelle: Gosh...flashback to grade 7 music. The instrumental music teacher used to throw the baton at kids and knock over the sheet music stand when she got extremely angry. I remember being terrified of her. On the other hand the vocal music teacher would wear low cut blouses and bend over all the time in front of the boys. Needless to say, many boys chose vocal music that year....
if my music teacher had done that...all you would've seen ,is some saggy baggys ....she was scolding me in front of the class, one time...and she grabbed me by the arm and i jerked away from her....and when she came at me, she tripped over her brief case and hit her head on the corner of the disk and got a big ole' black eye.....i just walked out of class

Ouch!! But you are bringing back some funny memories for me...University lecture hall, writing a brutal quantity surveyor exam..Deathly silent but the sound of shuffling papers and sniffles and the professor (I think she went to sit on the edge of the desk), wipes out to the floor with a big clatter, and 200 students look up and crack right up. She picks herself up in the quick bouncy motions of a cartoon character. She later became my boss and said that she knew the moment the incident happened by every exam paper, because the answers became gibberish at some point on every students paper.
friendsfirst: Do you have youtube? If so take video/audio and post it here.

Thanks Merky...
Does anyone remember the poor Canadian girl from Montreal who butchered the American National Anthem at a 2005 hockey game between Canada and the States, forgetting the lyrics, retrying twice over and then falling on the ice, all on live TV....Now THAT is a lot worse than farting while in the limelight...and gives stage fright a whole new meaning...poor thing

A short walk, some fresh air and the thought of the satisfaction you'll have when the performance is done always worked for me.

Thank you all for your advise and encouragement. The concert was successful, but I feel like an idiot for ever having thought that this was in any way about me. One of my strapping 9 year old boys diagnosis autism and cognitive developmental delays cried throughout the entire performance. His father, armed with his camcorder walked away distraught. In that, I failed him. Sometimes hate what I do....too much sadness... Goodnight all.

I'd usually suggest imagining the audience naked...but that could get you arrested in this case.
Seriously, I'd suggest spending some time visualizing positive things happening when you perform - linking performance with positive feelings through self-hypnosis/meditation.
