I have a performance tomorrow, not a biggie...but am accompanying a group of 5 to 11 year old munchkins on the piano for a Christmas concert. Although I have been playing for a long time, I still always feel physically sick when I have to perform in front of a group. I enjoy it, but get quite nervous still. How do you overcome stage fright? Do you do anything special to relax yourself? Would appreciate any input. Thanks.

I always tell people when you lose your stage fright...get out of the business. Now you're an egotist!!
Don't look AT the audience...look over their head...until you are comfortable...then eye to eye contact is very appealing!!
I always found deep breathing helped and for the times I Soloed, some saltines ~ 30 min before the performance.
Sometimes just putting the current music out of the way and previewing or playing new music, or playing other instuments parts while waiting helps too. It takes your mind off of the music you already know and is relaxing.
I used to get extremely nervous whenever I sang solos in church. My knees would be shaking. I'd just close my eyes when the music started & try to imagine I was just by myself practicing. I'd also try not to make a lot of eye contact because then I'd forget my words
As for playing my flute, I wouldn't get nervous because I didn't have to look at anyone, just at my music.
So I'd say just concentrate on the music & forget that everyone else is out there.
Snap..... I am doing the same. Just busy yourself with the kids and you will not have time to think and I always ask that the piano is put so that I can not see any of the parents just a view to one side of the kids playing their instruments...
You will be fab and all the parents will be so engrossed in their own kids they will have no interest in the teacher...
Let me know how it goes????
I have to do it twice tomorrow.... There is always the glass or two of wine at the end.
i work with kids and have a drama ministry- easy to make it not about me when i work with them
i dunno-just think of yourself as scenery-background? basically thats what you are to the audience in this case focus on the kids- connect w/ one of them maybe maybe the one looking for connection to get thru the performance and remember-its temporary-it has a beginning a middle and an end that helps me be less overwhelmed
and HAVE FUN-even if you feel like youre acting it helps everyone-including you

you can't ....i read an interview with sammy hagar...and he said, he almost feels like throwing up before a concert....what i have done ,in the past is, to fexate my focus on something else...something positive...i tryed to imagine that it was just me and my guitar....for the first couple of songs, anyway.....than after that, everything was ok

Thats an easy one. Tonight you dream. You are a star tonight in your dream. You are also a teacher in your dream. Your audience is a group of even smaller munchkins.(old ones) Focus on tempo precision and most of all FUN. Ages 5 to 11.Been to those. You will have a great time. Speak with the parents of said,"performing munchkins",before the event. Make sure they,(the muchkins) are well fed but not to much sugar.
OK! Am feeling a bit less ill now, I think...Mind you, it is still 14 hours away. But will think about what you have all said. Cute story. I was speaking with a child who was crying in anticipation of a solo she had to do at a performance. I was trying to reassure her that all would go well and asked her what the worse thing could be that would happen. With tears in her eyes and a shaky voice she said 'I'm afraid I might fart!' Had a real hard time holding a straight face after that, but dared not laugh at her fear....Happy ending though, no farts and a great performance from her...

What song/s will you be playing?
Have fun.
Hello there, The traditional christmas songs plus 'The answer is blowing in the wind', my favourite choice. Is very cool to hear little munchkins singing it.
