'And there shall be signs in the sun and in the moon and in the stars and upon the earth, the distress of nations, with great perplexity, over the sea and the roaring of waves.' Luke 21:25
Every generation in history has thought it would happen in their lifetime but we are all still here.
Mankind has always been fascinated by the end of the world.
We have famine, war, global warming, will the human race become extinct?
My opinion that each generation has likely thought they were near the end of time. I'm sure that during each war, famine, drought, global development, etc., there were multitudes of people thinking, "This is it!"... but how do we really know when the end will be? And do we really want to know, anyway?

Hard to tell. The way we're destroying the planet, we might be at the end of the human race...I think it's up to us. Do I believe that because of predicted omens or some looming year that ends an ancient calendar? No. I just know that we're destroying this planet, and Mama's getting pissed, and She'll return balance to Herself, even if She has to get rid of us to do it.

There are some events which could wipe us out. I do believe in the potentially catastrophic effects of global warming, but I doubt that humanity would go extinct because of it. We're pretty smart and very adaptable. And we can be pretty tough when it comes to survival.
Nuclear holocaust and subsequent nuclear winter could possibly do it. A large enough impact could definitely do it. A near pass of a star could do it by throwing the earth away from the sun. This could happen in about 250 million years when the Milky Way collides with Andromeda. But if we dodge all those disasters, all life on earth will come to an end when the sun becomes a red giant. This will be a long and horrible experience for life here, and the outcome is certain. But that won't be for another 4 or 5 billion years.
Some think that long before the Andromeda collision, we will have evolved into an entirely different species. That doesn't have quite the same connotation as going extinct. This is a good subject for debate, too, because I believe we have reached a point where the extensive mixing of the gene pool, along with our partial escape from the pressures of natural selection, (thanks to technology), might slow down or even stop human evolution. Or if we do evolve, it might be in planned, deliberate ways, like through genetic engineering.
In any case, I think there's a 90% chance that our current species will not exist in 250 million years, but our descendant species will.

Only if we believe it and continue to make horrible choices based on fears that are simply not true.
Maybe we are nearing the end of this world, and maybe our next world will be that much better.
Supposedly there is never an end, just a continuation. A beginning to the same tragic end in a cyclical sense. History can tell us that.
The end my only friend?
Is the end only the beginning to the same end? Is the beginning only the start of a new end? I just want to see an end to a new beginning that arises out of destruction....lol I guess f you want the rainbow, we have to experience the storms.
Tamarin: Myths and stories about the end of the earth exist in every religion and culture.
The Bible says in the Book of Genesis the earth is eternal....
Do we face an Armageddon?
Who knows?
But I hope when it does happen its all over and done with in an instant.
The idea of floods slowly encroaching on land until only the tips of mountains are left terrifies me, all I can see in that scenario is war and fighting.
