Really curious about this. Loosely speaking Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a disorder most commonly characterized by repetitive thoughts resulting in compulsive behaviours that the person feels driven to perform. Apparently approximately 1 in 50 adults have OCD, and twice that many have had it at some point in their lives. For some it affects their lives enough to compromise their quality of life. Some of the experts believe the disorder to be a result of serotonin flow problems in the brain.

I work with people with disorders and the more I learn about certain disorders, the more I think that perhaps many of us to a certain degree exhibit characteristics of some disorders. JMO. I cannot for the life of me go to sleep if my room is messy. I will clean my room at 4 in the morning after a night out if I have to before I can sleep. Otherwise I feel something ‘bad’ will happen. As the year draws to a close, I have found myself going nuts trying to get all my papers in order and to tie all loose ends. I also get a very uncomfortable feeling if I leave the house without tissue in my pocket…. Geez!

Does anyone care to share routines they feel a very strong urge to follow?

I have a little OCD...I like things neat and clean. But not to what you are experiencing.

I have bipolar depression, so it is probably linked to seratonin levels that I have some OCD.

I suggest you may want to talk to your doctor about it. If it is something you can live with, then don't get on medication for it.

Good luck to you!!

Thanks. It tends to be more annoying for another who may be living with me.

Hi E,

I have a thing about washing my hands after using a loo in a resturant or any other public place.

When I do wash my hand there I will soap up my hands and wash the tap, as I think if you turned on the tap with dirty hands ,so to speak ,the dirt will still be there, so I don't like a dirty tap
laugh

This I now do at home alsodunno

it not a distructive thing in my life and it only takes a second but it is a bit of a compulsion if I am being honest .

Sorry to hear about that. Were you borderline as a child or did it only come about in your teens or early adulthood?

Hi back,
Yup, I do the elbow door opening trick or use the tissue to open the door and then throw it out. Strange eh? But at least it is again another good one, taps in public....Yikes!

The elbow to the door and the cleaning a tap are things I learned in nursing school about how germs spread, so I don't consider Emanuelle or LL OCD for those! laugh I do them too because of my training.

Anyway...I'm a little bipolar, and a little OCD myself. I've turned around and driven past my house to make sure I closed the garage door (left it open once while I was gone for 13 hours, so I can explain that one), check later to make sure I've turned off the stove and burners...even though I've checked them twice already. Just little stuff. I can live with it all, so no need for meds yet.

laugh Give it a few more years, I might need them, though! wine

I'm a little OCD. The only one that annoys me is my mouse. It's a wireless mouse, and when I'm not using it I turn it off to save the battery. I'm constantly checking it, and making sure the light is off isn't enough, I have to shake it around and pick it up before I'm satisfied. dunno

Sorry mate. Freaks me out at school when I watch the kids touching the tap, but I try not to share my phobias with them. Poor things have enough to deal with without the added dimension of a germaphobic teacher.
