Justice?confused ... I had a family member in SA who was killed in their car by a man intent on committing suicide He had drunk a bottle of whisky and taken some pills,(according to his girlfriend), got in his car and headed off to ride into the first oncoming car! My parents-in-law where returning from a movie outing and theirs was the first car he saw. The wife died on impact and her husband was severely injured.

The judge said because she was over 70 she had lived her 3 score and ten (never mind that they were one week from celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary and the old man was left bereft).... and the young man got a ZAR400 fine (equal to about 100euro - then!) The criminal was not even injured, just unconscious for a few hours.... not even his driving licence suspended!

You see ... if you do not hire a VERY expensive top-notch lawyer (& bankrupt yourself) to fight for you ... you dont get Real "justice" - you just become a run-of-the-mill case. Sad huh?

I haven't even read the thread content, but let me just say this....today I find the concept of justice as pertains to law courts, and legal process, ridiculous and hypocritical. Ever since the greatest nation on earth, which has used democracy and the rule of law as it's guiding light, blatantly broke every law in the book with an unjustified, criminal war, extraordinary rendition, and torture, I gave up believing that justice was something achievable. International law is a joke, every nation simply adapts and interprets the law to suit it's own agenda. Selfishness, winner-takes-all and survival-of-the-fittest is the rule of law in this world. Or on a more plebian level, he who can buy himself a better lawyer, wins the day.

barf doh

Exactly. And the last time I had dealing with a lawyer I just could not resist sending him a postcard I found ..... Picture of two crocodiles lying on their backs in the sun picking their teeth, with the remains of a human lying about them, and one croc says to the other "Wow that was tasty!... and no hoofs or antlers."cheers

Sometimes, just sometimes, justice is served....Nelson Mandela, convicted "freedom fighter" or terrorist, depending on which way you look at it....is released after 20-something years on Robben Island, and becomes leader of his country....but this is rare..

That`s off topic - being a Political issue. I doubt a rexless and negligent driver would even get 26 years in prison?

The short answer is no...If you cause 1 death by reckless driving, you should get life.
