Early this year I was given 3 very large garlic cloves ready for planting. 6 months later and they are ready to dig up, I hope. Mine looks like this and the tall flower is about 5 foot high

While doing some research on when to harvest and perpare the garlic, I did find out some very interesting (frightening) stuff about the garlic we buy.

The majority of the world’s garlic is grown in China and is sprayed with chemicals and bleached white with chlorine during importation quarantine processes.

But if you really want to gag on your garlic, according to the CEO of the Australian Garlic Industry Association, “some garlic growers over there (China) use raw human sewage to fertilise their crops, and I don’t believe the Australian quarantine regulations are strict enough in terms of bacteria testing on imported produce” … so you might want to think again before you reach for that perfect white bulb in your supermarket

In Australia, 90% of the garlic we eat is imported yet we have around 15 different garlic varieties available to grow that don’t need to be biofumigated with chemicals like methyl bromide that have been banned here for domestic use.

Hi wash,

Plants look great,hope you get a good harvest,

I knew that they bleached it but didn't know the other thing,barf

I buy fresh garlic,purple in colour,from my green grocer ,

There is so much food that is imported that we don't know the full background off.


Best thing is grow your own if you can.

Even so called organic food is sprayed with chemicals that harm.

Best to grow your own Wash, I would have pulled them out before they start flowering, leave long stem on while drying so you can plait them together for storage when drythumbs up

I do use a lot of fresh vegies. The supermarkets have to label where their produce comes from. The green grocer doesn't. So we take his/her word for it - my local green grocer is a woman.

But does make you think. I buy some canned goods for cooking. My Coles Butter Beans are from Italy. My Edgell Red Kidney Beans are made from "Imported and Local Products."frustrated

Just glad that the beetroot is usually imported from NZ.

Many years ago, a pig-farmer PM (who eventually caused the collapse of the local pig industry through over-regulation) was trying to get approval for importing pre-cooked chicken from Thailand.

Have read a lot lately about that. Due to the chemicals, it is not possible to get any crop out of the imports most of the time.

Tomorrow being 37 degs here might be a good time to get one bunch out to see how it is going.

Dig a bit up, might be over ready, google it and find when is best time to harvest...Keep going hard in the garden, it's a very rewarding past time when you figure out what grows best where you live!dancing

Going through the internet and I found The Micro Gardener here in Aust (http://themicrogardener.com/5-step-guide-to-growing-gorgeous-garlic/). Had the best advice or saw of any. Even Alan Searle books have nothing.

Autumn is the best time to plant and harvest is many months away (about 6 months), when the bottom leaves are dying. I got them off a guy at work and planted them within a couple of days. I left work early May so it has been some time in the ground.It is at that stage (just lost the bottom leaves) but it is 40degs out there, and still hot tomorrow. So harvest is going to be Saturday, unless I get energetic early in the morning.

But according to Anne (the Micro Gardender) you can plant them any time of the year, but they may turn out to be similar to Leek. And not to plant them near peas or beans as they end up with no flavour.

Planting under roses is very could to control aphids. Mine are next to some potatoes but it hasn't stopped the bugs getting those leaves while the potatoes further away are doing great.

Love fresh garlic have it with cheese instead of onions.

Finally dug it up, huge bulbs. Trimmed the flower stalks off (flowers in a vase) and tried platting them. Got a photo somewhere on the camera but doing the photo comp has really caused me some download issues this month - which is am changing away from Telstra in the new year (on order). Next time I do a download.

When I dug them up, there were all these tiny brown "cloves" hanging on around the outside. Planted about 10 of them, gave my daughter 10 for her garden, and froze another 8 to plant next May.
