I am a south African or so I thought untill today. I was born there so was my parents and grandparents. I left South Africa 10 years ago. I thought I was going back for my daughters wedding in May 2012, I applied to renew my passport in Dec 2011 and found out today that cos I have not live in South Africa for more then 5 years I no longer am a citizen so have no right to a passport. I have a 5 years recidencia that needs to be renewed every 5 years so I have no citizen ship in any country. What the hell do I do with no passport

You'd best be calling the Consulate rather than asking here....Hope you sort it out - an awful predicament. Shame no-one bothers to tell you the implications of leaving your country for so long, and I guess we are so busy living, that we don't think of asking.

At this time of night either not a lot OR continue what your you are doing now (panicing or tying not to<--- only if your story passes the Jezza lie detecor).

Personally I'd open a bottle of wine and kick back. Basically chill out. And figure it out in the morning.

Could someone get you a new passport in SA with a legal paper were you give the right to that person to do so?

Could you apply for Spanish citizenship?

Good luck on that!

It take min 10 years for citizenship in Spain. Nobody in south africa to go on my behalf as I need to be seen face to face to issue anything and I have tried to speak to a laywer there he is going to see what he can find out. I just don't want to miss my only daughters wedding just cos I was born In South Africa

If you go to your embassy, they might provide you with a "special permit" to leave Spain and once in SA you can get a new passport.

Have you inquired if you are eligible for a Spanish passport given that you have permanent residency status?

p.s. a lesson for everyone. Best to keep renewing your passport instead of letting it lapse. I gather you had one when you left SA?

Yes I had one that lapsed in feb 2012 and when to the embassy to simply renew. Last time i WAS IN s.a. 2011 i ASKED IF i COULD RENEW AND THEY SAID THEY CAN NOT RENEW if I still have more then 6 months on it. What a joke. So I was at the embassy in Spain on the 4th dec to get it renewed and then this is the result. Well we are talking about South Africa here............Not much more to say.....

Ahhh ha! Josi ....dont worry about it. Seriously.

It takes about 18 months to renew your South African passport if you live in another country. I know, cause I had to renew mine.

The Department of Home Affairs in SA is in a total and utter mess! I know. Cause I tried contacting them when I was citizenless here last year - expired SA passport and expired Swiss visa (which could not be renewed without a current passport).

The Embassy staff in Berne were very helpful. VERY! Fortunately the staff in european countries are more intelligent than the staff in South Africa - they actually have functioning brains.

Just contact your local SA embassy in Spain about it. Get the name of the person you talk to, and keep contact until it`s sorted out.

You can also get a temporary passport - it cost a little bit more, but is valid for a short time while you wait for your real passport, and you can travel on it, and return to Spain if you have a current visa for there.

Glad you worked it out Josi. What a horrible predicament! I got a bit panicky for you just reading your post. Not a nice thought - to be a person who is refused citizenship by your own country!

As an aside, I was going home (to Canada from The Netherlands) last summer and realized at the airport that my passport had expired (along with my British one - dual citizenship). After slapping myself in the head over my negligent stupidity, 800 euros and a week lost I made it home. At the Canadian airport, I was told that you can always travel back to your home country on an expired passport and renew it upon arrival. Your home country can never refuse you entry. The trouble can arrive when travelling back to your host country if your passport is not renewed on time.

Anyway, good luck and congratulations on your daughter's wedding. handshake

smoky: Ja! I wish I had that sort of problem! Then the Swiss would HAVE to just accept me and all my baggage! hahahhaaa ..... imagine ... they`d have NO country to send me back to!

And I can`t be suspended in space .......
Thanx again Smoky I still can not understand how they can even think you can loose your citizenship where 4 generations was born?????? The fact is if you have no understanding about South Africa you will never get it. I know for sure the frustration of going back there and trying to get anybody that you can speak to to make sense of this insanity....But hey I am gonna be at my beloved daughter and will see my son again that I have not seen in a very long, long time. Happy days. Again thatx to all for the hel and advice.
