Night With A Wolf

High up in the lonely mountains
Where the wild men watched and waited;
Wolves in the forest and bears in the bush,
And I on my path belated.

The rain and the night together
Came down, and the wind came after,
Bending the props of the pine tree roof,
And snapping many a rafter.

I crept along in the darkness
Stunned, and bruised, and blinded;
Crept to a fir with thick set boughs,
And a sheltering rock behind it.

There, from the blowing and the raining
Crouching I sought to hide me;
Something rustled;Two amber eyes shone;
And a wolf lay down beside me!

His wet fur pressed against me
Each of us warmed the other,
Each of us felt, in the stormy dark
That beast and man were brother.

And when the falling forest
No longer crashed in warning;
Each of us went from our hiding place,
Forth in the wild, wet morning.
And

An fascinating and entertaining tale Mary... I can imagine sitting around the camp fire being regaled by countless such stories - that final 'And' - does that denote a sequel to this tale?

Best wishes

Nice tale Mary...so much folklore revolves around wolves in the Northern Hemisphere...we don't have them here, just Dingoes which are sort of wild dogs and intoduced foxes which like most introduced species here...just take over. cheers

There isn't a conclusion but rather an explanation... One stormy evening, I had to go out to the barn,I'd tripped and slipped in the mud. Trying to get my balance, I slammed into the horse trailer instead,hence the bruises. My white German Shepherd had heard the noise and ran out of the house to find me. I'm often told that he looks like a wolf, hence the poem came to me. :)

White wolves are held very sacred in Native American lore. :) I'm familiar with Dingos and have heard of their notoriety. :) Glad you liked this one. :) hug

Hi Scat cowboy

There's nothing like a wet German Shepherd sleeping with you who resembles a white wolf. :) This came to me after an experience in the rain. Glad you liked it. :) wine hug

Hi Mary

Thanks for that explanation - I honestly think that some dogs have such inborn instincts of love and loyalty, they can put some humans to shame...

Kind regards
