Minimum Wage

What if there was a worldwide minimum wage of 15 dollars an hour?
What would someone in Vietnam or China make in a year?
So let's multiply it out
15 hour work day times seven days a week equals 105 hours
Let's say they also get time and a half after 40 hours
So the first 40 hours would equal 600 dollars
The next 65 hours would equal 1,462.5 dollars
Add them together and you get 2,062.5 dollars
Multiply that out times 52 weeks and you get 107,250 dollars
What do they get now?
It's around a dollar an hour with no overtime
So they get 105 dollars a week and 5,460 dollars a year
Where does the 101,790 dollars a week go?
What do the owners of these companies do with all that money?
How much do you really need to be comfortable at their expense?
When is Michael Jordan going to go to Nike and demand good pay?
Probably not too soon as he just became a billionaire this year
Off of shoes made by neglected workers making a dollar an hour

About this poem:
I was listening to a cd book by Glenn Beck and had to go to a different cd that didn't deal with the minimum wage debate. Are there employers out there that believe as I do that workers should be properly taken care of?

The World is inherently unfair; however developing countries badly exacerbate their problems by making no meaningful attempt at birth control, hence there is always an over supply of unskilled workers, who in turn get paid less and less in real terms - sad but very true unfortunately.

lovecanbereal, thanks for your comment on my poem. The population thing has some merit, but it really comes down to people having representation. Some people do, unfortunately most do not and are taken advantage of.dunno

morgen90210, thanks for your comment on my poem. We have had a downturn in our business with very likely job cuts coming real soon. We have worked only 40 hours a week since early July, which I like, but now I have to wonder if I'll have a job tomarrow.frustrated

Hello MC, like your post, and it brings back many memories. I recall when I started to college (1941)I worked in a drug store and was paid a whooping 10 cents and hour, a little later I worked in a café ,that time for 25 cents an hour. Things did get better as I served in the Army Air Corps, and after I came home I attended college on the GI Bill, that was heavenly.
Since that time I have often thought about the unfairness of wages, and one thing that burns me is the Federal Legislature. They will not allow pay to be above the $7+ an hour. Here is something for you to chew on. Their pay is $174,000 per year and they are always complaining about the cost of government, - cut this, cut that, and look what they are doing to the children of the nation while cutting funds to schools and food as well.
Back to the legislature, there are approximately 600 members making that, plus perks - multiply $174,000 X 600 - that's a heap ! I say every elected and appointed member shall have their salary reduced by 20% , if the ordinary person has to live on $7.25 an hour, the elected must share in the reduction of wages. studecar frustrated very mad

I think that if the companies invested more in their workers instead of the CEO's (outrageous salaries and perks in multi-millions EVERY year)- I think they would find they have more loyal workers who are the backbone of every company. Endicott-Johnson Shoe Company in Endicott, N.Y. knew this. When the immigrants came to Ellis Island - they said back in the 20's and 30's that when they hit American soil they knew some English words and they were "Which way E.J.?" Google Endicott Johnson Shoe Company, Endicott, New York and see what you come up with. Their even may be a video from WSKG Public TV on them as they were two men who started the company. They had free health care for their workers. My grandfather worked their and they could buy bread for 5 cents and other stuff. They cared for their workers and it showed in production.
