Legal Alien

I AM
this legal alien
feeling unsettled
like a pen with no ink;
car without an engine;
jockey without a horse;
child without a parent;
house without a roof;
infirm without a bed;
boat without an anchor;
pet without an owner;
plane without a pilot;
bike without wheels;
pot without a plant;
spring without water;
Like a tree without roots;
feeling unsettled
this legal alien
I AM

About this poem:
Humans develop a deep connections with the places they settle in and the need to feel we belong to a place, to a unit or group of people, a community or society is inherent in us all! The mind might not always grasp what the heart feels.

Pray that God will fit you in this society. This is a country of immigrants and if you are a legal one you have the right to feel this is your home.teddybear

We are all God's children and one family with one Father as the Head. You will always have a home and be one with us in the poetry corner. Very heartfelt right - from one Kathy to the other!

Hi thanks for leaving a comment, very much appreciated. We are all immigrants one way or another and totally agree with you that the US is a country of immigrants and AU where we live is not much different. I wrote this in general. I work with migrants and I deal with their concerns and problems and in trying to help them in their journey settling down in this country (AU); they remind me of how I was 25 years ago when I first started my life in NZ and again in AU where I am now living with my husband.

Moving to AU was never my plan; and this place became home to me. And though I am legally allowed to stay and work here, I am nothing but a stranger. I've worked in a program by the state government for a few years now and would like to have the right to have a say, the right to vote, the right to petition for and in behalf of the people I am helping... but I can't do so. Often I feel like a phony advising fellow migrants to do this and that while they are residents and have more rights in this country than I have. That feeling of not having your feet both on the ground is quite unsettling and my future looks uncertain.

Most people; especially those who have never left their home country; forget that when a person leaves a place to live in another for long periods; that person will change and the people left behind change too. Going back would be a shock in the system, especially at my age. wine purple heart

Hi Kathy
Thank you for taking the time, lovely to hear from you. I guess my home beyond this realm...well that is the only thing I can look forward to now. But to be able to live at peace and settled in life would be so much better and when we do we can be better servants. hug wine angel

Hi Oriental. Sorry, you feel that way where you are living now. My parents immigrated to the USA after WWII. Settled themselves in the USA. We were three siblings all born here. After my father's death, my mother returned to her country of origen with all three of us. It was a big impact for us. After the years passed we all were able to return. I came back after 30 years. I worked as a social worker for Refugees and Asylees. Giving these persons and families an adjustment to a new culture, language, etc. Here you can work yourself to become a US citizen and have future rights to vote and let your voice be heard. I don't know how the laws are where you are. Living as an immigrant part of my life, I can understand how you feel. Never lose hope of living your life where you feel accepted. Changing one person's life is very rewarding as you do. May God give you the strength to guide you in your future endeavors. SM

Hi SM

Thank you so much for your kind words. From your background, I know and I believe that you understand how I feel. I hope one day, I will be able to have my rights as a human being be recognized.

For now, I am committed to helping others the best way I can. Take care and God bless!

Hi Morgen
Long time no hear my friend! One day Nu and I will come to Singapore God willing! We would love to catch up if we ever ended up there. And his offer for you to stay with us if you ever visit AU, I am sure is still open.

Lots of things involved when you move to another country. The real issue for me is that they have made it quite expensive for Kiwis to apply for residency over here. Where as being married to a local usually helps, it works the other way around for me.

But don't let cases like mine discourage you, you can open up your world living in a different places now and then. cheers
