anyone living in the states at the time - it was the Beatles no question - no comparison, then or since
for several fairly obvious reasons
their close connection in their early music to American bluesmen and obviously untouchable with both harmonizing and blues rhytm guitar made them the first of their kind. Looking at early songs like Twist & Shout, Honey Don't and then following their transition and evolution from Rubber Soul to Sgt Pepper and then to the White Album where they incorporated the Sitar. I mean I could go on forever here. There's really just no comparison. To ID a band with the impact of the beatles is virtually impossible ...maybe, and this is just maybe....Metallica or Zepplin
And as far as songwriting Lennon and McCarty may be the most talented and most enduring song writing team of the 20th or any century.
that came after the Beatles first Ed Sullivan show was a copycat (with perhaps a few original elements)
and really when u talk about the stones u need to consider Keith Richards
felixis99: I saw the Stones in concert and they were fabulous - about 16 years ago, I think
I was really impressed!but I am a child and student of the original Fab Four - grew up wiht the Beatles as an enduring influence - they will always be a favorite
The Beatles and The Rolling Stones were very friendly with each other back in those days, Pink Floyd was there also. John Lennon and Mick Jagger were kind to each other.
True Rolling Stones stories from a couple of years ago:
1} Mick and Keith were interviewed and asked how they felt in the morning. Mick replied first and said “I make a list of what I’m going to do for the day”. Keith responded: "I feel just lucky if I can get up in the morning”.
2} A smoking ban in England had just been imposed in public places. That didn’t stop Keith and Ron on stage. They lit up in Concert. The Police gave them a ticket! The Stones laughed it off.
The Rolling Stones can do whatever they want!
The Beatles Get Back with Rolling Stones in the Apple Studios
Changed the face of popular music forever, intoduced the world to the concept album, revolutionised (with George Martin) how music was heard, have been covered by more than any other artist...There isnt a moment in time where an original Beatles song isnt being played by a radio station somewhere on earth... Record sales...During the week of 4 April 1964, The Beatles held twelve positions on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart, including the top five positions. Neither feat has been matched by any other artist to date. There are a world of stats that can be quoted, but creativly and culturally the Beatles are without equal in the long history of popular music...
I have too many threads going on here to post a new thread, but here is an idea! Could someone post a new The Who thread and/or poll? The Who is right up there in the top 5.
