GotTrance: Why do so many people use their phones during a movie? Even if it is just texting it is still bothersome to those around.
I find it rude.
If I've paid £9 to watch a film, I'm GOING to watch it. If anyone has their phone even on, I'll ask them to turn it off. Nothing more distracting than having a phone screen lighting up an area, as my eyes are drawn to it like moths.
If they have the cheek to make/take a call, and I've asked them once to stop, I'll call the staff and get them removed.

I think it's ok, if you're young and have children, possibly with a babysitter. I would step out, of course, to answer. Or if it was a text, I would also read it and reply if need be, but again I would step out. There are many reason why, NOT to turn your phone off. Any emergency you missed, could be a very big mistake. I have a story for ya, but I'll spare you.

I'm glad that you wrote. I'm one of these old fuddy duddies that doesn't really like electronics much, anyway, and of course, my question is always, "what did folks do before"? After giving your post some thought, I have to say you have a point. This is 2011--we have cell phones, GPS devices, etc... and emergencies DO come up. I do believe that if people only used their various communication tools for those emergencies , (while out socializing or to movies, etc...) it wouldn't be noticed but the reality is that goofy people use them 24/7 for any and every thing, to many others' annoyance. Now, there was an incident some years back when a female executive had two children, one in elementary school, and one in day care. Overworked in a treadmill world, she absolutely had a mind blank about leaving the younger child in the car, while she went into a meeting with her bosses, where cell phones were banned. The pre-school had tried to reach her to find out why the child wasn't left, but of course could not. (I've always wondered why they didn't alert the place of business, instead, but really, was it their responsibility to do so? Many people do not report in when their kids are going to miss school, etc...) Well, the toddler died in the car, the woman claimed that it was the employers fault for demanding that she turn her cell phone off (balderdash, I say) and I never did hear what happened--a terrible mess - and everyone at everyone's neck over who was right, wrong, etc... I almost can't stand cell phones, and in spite of the tragedy, I have to say I would be on the employers' side--if you want and need to have a career, then it is up to you to have everything in place, but I do have a heart for this. Still, it is not fair to blame the employer for having a policy, in my opinion.

And I agree with this. Smart users is what we need, but unfortunately, most users are not smart users and it is annoying. Even as we get older, then we have eldering parents to think of. So, We could always put on vibrate, I guess.
......i do not see the value of texting........it is absurd to see grown people punching tiny letters on a miniature device.....talking [in private] is what phones are for........texting reminds one of 6 or 7 year olds playing about in a sandbox.........

If they're in a building sitting down at least they're not behind the wheel of a vehicle.

true.better than some teenies fondling and making oohaaa noises up the back row on a first date.
Good question...Its seems in this electronic age we should also have some phone etiquitte to go with it. Using your phone in a movie theater when peeps have paid good money for admission is just plain rude.

I guess you could say that about any question posed on here eh...But isnt that what a forum is for? Asking random questions, chatting and exchanging opinions? Where else then? Or should we keep it to heavy world politics?

never use my mobile during a movie. I always turn it off. Even they activate silent on their phones, but still the light on the phone is very bothering when they text.
I agree Venus but some things are just plain silly. I was offering my own personal opinion on this subject just like everyone else. The best thing about us is we all have differing views and are free to express them. I think I may have been in a bit of a mood when I wrote that but I think some people need to perhaps put their efforts into better causes. JMO.
P.S I would never discuss politics, its one of my hated subjects to talk about.
My former step-daughter was texting during a popular movie (I think it was the last Twilight Saga, not sure). Any way, she was asked to stop. She refused stating it was her right and so forth. The light from her cell was always set to brightness. She never compromises nor used common sense, it's either "Haley's way or no way.".
The police were actually called and she was physically dragged out of the movie AND she had to refund the costs of tickets for everyone that was watching.
She had just turned 18 (and KNEW everything) and despite her mom's wanting to help pay, the Judge ordered my former wife to stay out of it.
I don't know if "Haley" every paid off her fines and restitution or not, but hopefully it will be the wake up call she needs.
