The Myan calender runs in 5200 year cycles. 2012 ends a cycle and new cycle begins. There is nothing the Myans said about the world ending. They said we are entering a new age.
If we can believe some of the translations we are to be visited by a race that from another planet or maybe dimension. But as we really know every little about the Myan writng system we can't put much faith in these tarnslations.
The Spanish burned most of the Myan books. If I remember right there is only 1 book to survive. This lack of reference material makes it extremely difficult to make accurate tarnslations of the Myans writings.
