Waterbearer63: Everyone faces life altering decisions sometime during their life. Are people so self-centered that they wouldn`t help a stranger or do people still have morals?.
Nope... first of all Im responsible for my family... second, why is a life of a total stranger more important to me then my own...
Waterbearer63: Aw. What`s wrong, you don`t like cats?. Thanks for the laugh, really needed that today. It`s pouring rain here and that always depresses me.
An hour north of you,...and yup,...raining here as well,...total elation though,....an excuse NOT to cut the 5 acres of lawn!!! Then again,...we really do not need the rain in Alberta,...

If you have 5 acres of lawn to cut I hope you have a riding lawnmower and not a pushmower because that would take a week. By the time you finished it would be time to start all over again.

Johnny Cash singing?. By the looks of that video it`s time for Calgarians to sell their cars and buy boats instead.
This particular question serves to bring out the heroes. Why don't you ask "Would you give someone else's life to save a stranger"? that might challenge people.
Say for instance you were on a small stone built bridge that spanned over a railway track. On one side of the bridge you saw a small child tied on the tracks. But on the other side you saw a fat man sitting on the bridge parapet happily eating an ice cream. There was a train coming and the only you could think to save the child was to push the fat man off the bridge. Would you do it?

LOL! Hell,....Alberta will survive,....this kind of stuff just gives us something to tell the young ones,...(Hey sonny,....you should have seen the flood of 13,....)

Uh,.....no,....for I cannot see how pushing the fat man off of the bridge will save the child who still remains tied to the tracks.
A_Non_A_Moose: Uh,.....no,....for I cannot see how pushing the fat man off of the bridge will save the child who still remains tied to the tracks.
Uh...Well the train driver will jamb on the breaks when he sees the fat man falling onto the tracks. This will hopefully stop the train in time to save the child.

Hmmm, you stated that I was to push him off of the bridge,...without mention of pushing him onto the tracks,....yet,...why did not the engineer hit the brakes when he saw the child on the tracks? And this is of no regard, for knowing the braking distance of a train with attending cars, most take a great distance to come to a compete stop, and in this instance, both the fat man, and the child would be killed.
But I believe the intent of your proposal was "Would I sacrifice someone else to save another's life?" I guess that would entail considering the people involved, the rationale, and the circumstances,...but in the simplest of pretense,...does not a Captain of a fire brigade possibly sacrifice those under his command to save the lives of others by commanding them to fight a fire?

Albertans are tough, we can take winters here, a little rain is nothing. Kind of reminds me of photo my dad had taken of him one winter. Our family farm was about 20 miles south of Edmonton. Are you familiar with how tall a yard light on a farm is, the one by the house?. Anyway, one day when I was in my early teens I was complaining how deep the snow was and the fact that I`m the one who had to shovel the walks. Dad doesn`t say a word, just gets up and walks out of the room. About 5 minutes later he comes back holding a black and white photo. "So you think this snow is deep do you?.This is how deep it was here in 1948". I looked at the photo. It was him in the picture standing on the snow and leaning with one hand resting on TOP of the yardlight some 30 ft high. There was only about two feet of the top of the pole showing and him leaning against it with his hand. That`s how bad the snow had drifted into the yard. Isn`t that something?. I`m guessing it was about 30 ft deep since I`m using the yardlight as a reference but don`t know the actual height of one.

The average train takes a mile or more to stop when travelling at 60 miles per hour. The likelihood of that child being killed by the train is extremely high. Unless the child could free himself in time, he would be dead.

LOL! Sounds like Leduc country,...where my dad's older brother used to farm at! But hey,....ssshhhh,....no need to mention how harsh the winters can be here,....I am still trying to convince "someone" it isn't all that bad here in the winter!

You`re right. It was Leduc county. From our farm you could see what is now Highway 2 just south of the Truck scales.

Well I guess you're focusing on the operational side of things whereas I was hoping you might have the smarts to contemplate the moral dilemma involved.

Oh I have the smarts to contemplate it. And in the scenario you described and using what I know about the stopping distance of a train I can answer your question. The answer is no. I would not attempt the rescue as there is no possibility of success.

You're still not getting it, are you? The scenario is just that. I didn't give the velocity of the train nor the mass of it. You assumed all that and attempted to undermine the proposition with your assumptions. Can you not deal with the moral issues it raises?
Forcedhand: Well I guess you're focusing on the operational side of things whereas I was hoping you might have the smarts to contemplate the moral dilemma involved.
If you want to have a "Battle of wits" with me, you`re going to have to come up with tougher scenarios than what you`ve shown so far.

In that particular situation, the moral implications plays no role in the decision making process for me. When there is zero chance of success, morality means nothing to ME. Note that I said to me. To someone else it may matter. To me it does not.
BB_snickers: There's no one stranger than me, so sure.
No one stranger than you. Hmm....Not sure about that. In my short time on this site I`ve run into some rather...shall we say Unique?...individuals. I seem to attract them for some unknown reason.
