truheart1941: not knowing how to apply...c.r.p.....(ways/method)....I may feel reluctant...to do mouth to mouth.....with my own family in mind....just in case they were contagious....??????....but to do what I could to save that person.
There was a poll/thread posted in the past about whether or not a person would risk their own life to save a stranger...do you recall that?
To me, if someone is in need of my help, It's my responsibility to act. CPR is not that difficult and I'm sure people have seen it done on tv. How hard is it to give it a try?

No guts, no glory!
hi....I can see where your coming from.just say for instance that person was ..H.I.V...positive...why should I jepodize my family health....though a act of kindness......guts/glory....??????????.
Earlier in the thread someone mentioned not helping the person survive but instead holding their hand so they don't die alone and advising them not to be afraid. Well I can't imagine standing by while another human being is dying before my eyes and not even making an attempt to do something.

you cant catch HIV from given mouth to mouth, in fact cpr you don't even have to use your mouth, just chest compressions.

HIV cannot be contracted by CPR. You mentioned earlier you were in the medical field years ago, you should know this.

ekself: After your good deed of the day of saving a homeless person's life...are you going to take him home and care for him? If not what is the use of saving his life and by that add some more suffering to it. He could have gone to heaven if it was not for you. I shall phone for help and then just hold his hand and tell him not to be afraid. If he dies while waiting for medical help he will at least not die alone.

lalasierra: http://depts.washington.edu/learncpr/quickcpr.htmlFor those who don't know CPR, here's your opportunity to learn it.
That's useful but it should be pointed out, cpr alone will not usually restart the heart beating. You are in effect keeping the blood flowing until a defib can be used. It's vital that the cpr is continued until a defib is available and quite often people need to take turns to administer cpr as done properly it is a very exhausting task.

This is a good point but a person can only try to do their best and work with what they've got.
CPR can break ribs and causes immense pain I personally would like my last minutes to be as painless as possible. I'm not saying I wouldn't try but It would depend on the age, health and wishes of the person. If cpr is administered to someone who has a DNR order then they can sue. Also it is assault on the body as I said very complex.

If a person has stopped breathing and is unconscious it's unlikely the emergency services would arrive in time to save them. CPR is the only way to sustain life until medical help arrives.
