Several of my married friends still use their former last name. There are much more important issues to work out to make a marriage a success than this.

I wouldn't like it. Not doing so suggests an individualistic and self-interested mentality which seeks to defy commitment and undermine the concept of family which is supposed to be the work of a team. And there's no "I" in teamwork.
Of course, taking on the new name doesn't mean that you're not a selfish moral blank, but you are probably less likely to be one.
