Ulimaroa: Which Extensions are/can be recommended?

A while ago i took my PC to a computer shop to have some extra memory installed.
I happened to mention to the technician that i had installed Firefox as an extra browser, and he said "oh,you've got that, have you?",in a disapproving tone.

I later decided to uninstall the Firefox browser.
My PC has 'windows',and Internet Explorer is the default browser,so i thought best to leave well alone.

Well people disapproved of Explorer
giving Microsoft to much leverage,
so I got Firefox,
and they were (to me) the first
to come up with certain extensions I found practical.

For instance bookmark - toolbar bunny

It was'nt that i did'nt like Firefox.
But my understanding of computers is extremely limited, and the message that seemed to be coming through to me from the tech guy,was that having both browsers at once could cause some kind of internal conflict,in the computer.

I have no idea if that is the case,or not. Just thought it best to play safe. beer

hi Ulihug maybe just a thin line between clever and rude? but my opinion is that self installing programs are not particularly clever. i will never use firefox for that reason. they need to show a few manners, JMHO.

Have you ever come across a self-installing woman?

You know, they just move and start organising your life for you; before you know it you've lost your identity, your will to live and just wander around the place 24/7 muttering:

'Yes dear'

Yup - self-installing women need keeping an eye on, because before you know it they've married you, then divorced you and uninstalled you from what you thought was your own home!

For the pc's use Firefox; a thousand times better than Explorer; or get a Mac for both. Superior performance and no virus can penetrate their systems or be hacked into except by certain security branches of our Govt.laugh

Firefox to 95%, since there are a few sites that do not support Firefox very well.

You have much better basic security in Firefox, more available options and add-ons and better control over what you want it to do and how. The latest version to require a bit of memory (RAM) when running, but if that is an issue, you can always install an earlier version.

There is no good way to compare to IE, but instead you have many other free browsers available, worth a try.

For me IE is what had to be done, while FireFox is what could be done.

In a PC running MS Windows you can not de-install IE, since it is part of the core and is used to run the update system for example.

It co-exists just fine with any other browser client you would like to use.

Firefox is not for "Nerds", it is actually more user-friendly than ever was IE.

I do not leave a PC without adding Firefox to it, if it has only got IE.

Thanks,Mike. It's that bit about co-existing with another browser that i was concerned about.

But now something else concerns me.
It has been mentioned that it has it's own virus checking security.
I have AVG security installed. Will it co-exist happily with that?
I'm thinking about the firewall aspect of it.

Firefox do not check viruses as such. What it has is a function to check if the site you are trying to reach is known to be a fishing site or generally a bad site. It has two ways of doing this - asking an internal list of "forbidden" sites or ask google. Not both, you choose method if you at all want to use it. And I would suggest using the built in list, it work well.

Firewalls and virus scanners is still needed. Firefox is not any of those, it is a browser that just cares a little extra what is happening in the background before it accepts it.

I have no situation where Firefox have been in conflict with anything, but it has a few things that works less well than in IE. It is because the developers of the site in question have been using exclusively IE designed functions. In those cases I still use IE if I have to visit the site, but I also message the site owner telling them about the problem.

I use Firefox extensively, but do not limit your experience, try other free browsers, maybe you will find one that is small, fast and do just what you want it to without all the extras you never use anyway. Check Opera for example.

Most popular browsers comes from the free software world (ie Linux) and have been converted to the Microsoft environment. They are all good fun to use with their own little soul.

Always be cautious of any software that claims to do it all in the orchestra. They WILL be making compromises to fit it all in one suite.nerd typing

I have used Firefox quite some years now. Very happy with it. OK, it takes ages untill it starts but afterwards it's fast. I experience it faster than IE.

I like Firefox because there are a lot of usefull plug-ins. Something for almost every taste, so to say, and a lot of themes.

Since a while I have installed Chrome. I like it. Almost. I miss some things I am used to but it's ok. It's fast, it loads fast, no problem with sites yet.

Years ago I have used Netscape untill it became very "heavy". Then I switched to Firefox.

I am not using one browser or another because it's more secure than the other. I'm not that paranoic. I'm looking at how easy it is to do things. Firefox had browsing tabs from the beginning. IE didn't. So IE lost the battle with me because one "small thing" that I considered very very usefull.

All the known browsers available now are good. And the best is the one that seems to suit your needs better. There are a lot of Opera users out there who would try to convince the rest that Opera is THE browser. The same goes for Apple's Safary (I tried it too. It's nice, it's new, it's refreshing). But I see no reason for the moment to give up Firefox. I'm too used to it. But, never say never, I'm considering Chrome a very strong candidate :))

A browser cannot install itself on a computer without somebody installing it. Somebody NOT something. Firefox does not install itself just out of the blue.

I did not say anything about downloading. I have mentioned that Chrome loads fast as in it starts faster.

Firefox, Chrome and Safari load pages faster = they read and render the webpages faster than IE. A big advantage for those who visit website with a lot of photos/images.

Yes, it can. But... does it make sense somebody installing Firefox remotely on your machine, just for fun?

In response to: i found it installed and i didn't install it.

Are you the only one using that computer? Has anyone installed any software on that computer around the time you say Firefox appeared on your computer out of the blue?
