In response to: Because if we don't move swiftly to (give $650 million for coupons for digital TV conversions, $400 million for global warming research, $335 million for STD prevention, $50 million for National Endowment of the Arts), our economic crisis could become a national catastrophe. Millions of Americans will lose their jobs, their homes, and their health care. Millions more will have to put their dreams on hold.
The fate of the free world is resting on digital TV conversions and STD prevention. Incredible.
louie0204: I am curious to know what everyone thinks about Barak Obama's proposed stimulis package as it now stands.
It can't help.
The problem with the economy is not that it is sluggish and needs to be stimulated. The US is dead broke. Not just broke but maxed out in debt. It's been living on credit for years and credit is no longer even offered.
The government has no real money to inject into the economy. All they have is the ability to create more monopoly money.
Each new dollar they create for these stimulus packages shaves a bit of value off all the other dollars already in circulation and transfers it to whoever is getting the bailout.
The stimulus packages are a way to rob the general population and pay off the fat-cats being "stimulated".
It serves nothing to try to "stimulate" a dead horse.
arabella: Won't need martial law until the weather gets warmer.
No one wants to take to the streets when it's cold out. The whole bail out strategy stinks!
When businesses are not selling products and have no customers, they should CLOSE and declare bankruptcy, which is a private matter!
Should the government support everyone???
The government's only concern is perpetuating itself. Never has any of them given a crap about "Joe SixPack" unless it lends some good rhetoric during an election. Once they're elected, its business as usual.
Interesting that Daschle stepped down from Health. I wonder how many more conflicts of interest are going to plague this Administration?
Or any administration.
Black skin. Business as usual.
Pork, pork, pork, with our local Taliban obstructing it all for the simple reason that they don't have any better ideas.
Get the money out of Washington and back into the hands of the people. That's economic stimulus. Otherwise, its the Potomac Two-step.
I have faith in this administration and I think this stimulus package is a step in the right direction. We have a tough road ahead though!! It is a work in progress and we are headed in a new direction. Anything is better than the last 8 years

The only thing this stimulus helps are the people who gave us that credit. Stop imports, stop outsourcing, stop volume distribution from countries that are ostensibly our enemies (Microsoft, Adobe, and Intel and India, Walmart and China. That's so goooood for our economy. <sarcasm> )

there will be no perfection in this,,for those that take the "arm chair" approach,,nothing will resolve the problems

By all means. Believe in yourself. Believe in the American people. But do NOT believe the government.
Even in this new Administration, dissent is not disloyalty. That was the rhetoric we dealt with the last 8 years. Be ready for more of the same, this time from a leftist body.
Ultimately Fascist and Socialist agendas are the same. Grow the government. We must be the bulwark against this special interest pork. Let your leaders know, if they don't do their job for their constituents rather than their special interests, we WILL find somebody who will.

Boycott the "fat cats" that have cultivated this mess
"The term corporate welfare is widely used to describe the bestowal of favorable treatment to particular corporations by the government. One of the most commonly raised forms of criticism are statements that the capitalist political economy toward large corporations allows them to ‘privatize profits and socialize losses’,” In the same time fearsely saying that Socialism is something "Anti American" - becomes the greatest joke in US History - because what happens here is "take the money from the people and give them nothing in return" - while socialize losses back in taxes to the people..
Production ´? - OK - As long as Californian wine costs 1,99 € instead 3,99 $ for the same brand in the US - I can help to support your economy ..

First, the government's role is to nurture, not enable. Make sure there is a ROI on every welfare dollar spent. Skill-enhancement should be emphasized. Give a man a fish, and he eats for a day, teach him to fish, and he eats for a lifetime.
Secondly, in business, do not reward failure. Punish it. I'm sick of incompetent rich people getting government money. If you're mentally incompetent, you're not fit to lead, and darwinian logic says you must die off. That is Adam Smith.
Thirdly, Level the playing field economically. Tally up the 800 billion dollars and give an equal share back up to the tax payer. Hey, I could start a hell of a business with $320k.

your first paragraph sound like the "ceta" program in the late 70" early 80's during the bad times then, i worked in that program unemployment rate was 14 percent in my state at the time, people were against ceta and there were debates about the marits. but i thought it helped everyday people put food on the table and you earned it, many folks were trained in work they never did before, while earning a paycheck, i say bring back ceta or similar for the people.

IT MUST BE PASSED! It's going to save the world.
(in reality, it's payback for Obama getting elected.) In 2-3 years we'll see inflation out of control. One trillion dollars to create or "save" 3 million jobs.
Hell, for that kind of money, I could create all kinds of jobs. Mainly hiring maids and servants.

It was called the Oregon Educational Therapy Administration up here. My mom went back to high-school, got her diploma, and was actually qualified to be more than a home-maker, all the while getting paid like it was her job. And when it was all done, she could be more than a janitor.
Galactic_bodhi: I wonder how long it will take for them to declare martial law?
I don't expect to see any real declaration of martial law. Just greatly increased police presence, increased militarization of the police force, and eventual direct military policing or perhaps the new "civilian security force" Obama is creating. Martial law disguised as something else.

All part of the shift toward totalitarianism that they require to keep their positions in an ever more populated world. Without predators, we prey on our own. That is not just human nature, but nature itself.
