really.. 2 & 3 are the only true options, would you rather take pain meds that work well but leave you stoned or.. would you rather be on pain meds that only take the edge off of the pain and not be stoned.( but still in pain..just a bit more tolerable)

Talking about severe pain like a bad hip, back problems, nerve damage and so on. dunno

confused

I am asking because I have friends on meds and they have often said.. they don't know which is worse....
being in pain or being so high.
and I worked in a nursing home for many years.
Many of these older folks were so stoned that they didn't even know where they were or who their family members are.
(not from dementia) but drug induced.

well said there.....bouquet

Everyone's pain threshold is different.

When I first hurt my back it would have been good
to have been stoned out, but I always think if you
can't feel the hurt, maybe you would do yourself
more harm.
Twisting my knee out of wack was bad but straightening
the leg to put it back is worse.

No you didn't, it is just what many of us do with
the first post in a thread,
we ask the question, but because we don't give the
background it can go off in some very strange
tangents.

all good (well mostly!)

Had a horse fall on me years ago and was badly hurt, never took any pain meds.
2 years ago..broke my heel and had to have a plate put in, only took oxycodone (sp) for 2 days. still have a full bottle.
then a year later had the plate removed.. only took one pill that night.

But no telling what older age or injury could bring.

I feel for those that have to stay stoned to survive each day.

When I was at my Dr. appointment a 2 years ago, in the waiting room I met and had a long chat with a early 20s girl there that had been hit by a drunk driver.
she was in a wheelchair, had broken both knee caps, lower legs and both heels.. I felt so lucky with my *now minor* injury and was almost in tears for her.. knowing how much she had to be suffering.

Pain is such a complex thing. We have pain receptors to inform us that something is wrong with a part of our body, a warning signal.

Chronic pain is a different story, that is, pain that is experienced for longer than about 6months, regardless of intensity.

Research has shown that there are various factors related to chronic pain. Two key ones include psycho social factors as well as the person's tendency to 'catastrophise'. High 'catastrophisers' are more prone to develop chronic pain than low c's. I have had root canal treatment without any anesthetics, by choice. I almost fell asleep during the lengthy procedure. I can be said to have a very high pain threshold.

We are all different.

I think I voted incorrectly in the poll. I clicked on meds that take the edge off but that is not the worst. Living with the constant pain is much worse. I have slipped discs in my neck that have been causing me chronic pain for years now but I have always only taken the bare amount of pain killer to ease it to a tolerable level. Recently it has been worse and I have been tempted to go higher but as it is easing again now, I am glad that I didnt.

Being in pain can make you "out of it" as well so if it was a choice between being in pain and being stoned but pain free, I would go with being stoned comfort

I think pretty much the same. do not like to take any kind of meds, but I especially do not like to be high.

i think that they are other options, such as physical therapy, relaxation techniques, and deep breathing instead of all these chemicals.

I agree...BUT in the mean time...you do need something for the pain...preferably something that helps too like a muscle relaxer and/or anti-inflamatory...both mixed together is the best depending on the problem...that's the only thing that worked for me..just pain pills didn't touch my pain when I first hurt my back years ago....thumbs up

I ocassionally will take a muscle relaxer at bedtime only. I don't take pain pills cause yeah the pain is still there they just take some edge off of it. I have many severe cramps in my back, my shoulders and chest muscles and my left arm, cause of my neck damage.
And my surgery worked only for 4 years before it broke down. Now the bone spurs left behind I was told can be worse than a ruptured disk well they are right about that. And I do have nerve damage being done everyday from those spurs and all of the collasped disk in my neck and back.
I Have no feeling in my left thumb and it is starting to spread to the next finger. Ugh.
I can handle the pain till it gets too much then I will take a flexiril before bed. That is the only pill that helps. The pain pills just make me sleep my life away.crying wine sigh

I feel really sorry for anyone feeling physical pain every day, but i have a suggestion that you might find very useful.

Have a look online for this book, it will be available everywhere and should be in your library.

I already do exercises to keep my low back muscles built up so that slipped disk doesn't bother me 99% of the time. But my neck disk become irritated with anything I do and the pain does not get better with any sort of physical therapy been there done that.
All they wanted to do next was sever the nerve but I would have lost all feeling in my left arm and hand and upper back and chest. crying crying

I had my surgery four weeks ago and was on pain meds for quite a while. I re-hurt myself and had a second surgery. Without the pain meds life would have been unliveable; however, I slept my life away for several weeks. So I tried to manage the pills by holding off on the dosage until after lunch each day. That way I slept the entire afternoon.

Without the pills I couldn't stand, sit or lay down. It hurt in any position. No way I could have be able to go without the pills.
