I like to chat because you get to see the words you may have to eat!professor Chatting is like a group discusssion & there is much to be learned. If only a new spin on an old idea. Also info is quicker...more friends can "step up to the plate" & help out with advice, info & friendship.cheers

I prefer to talk on the phone or to meet in person.
Chatting, for me is just a means of getting to know
eachother in a limited way. However,if something serious
came out of two people meeting, chatting is a good resource
where a long distance relationship is concerned.conversing
Scubadiva: I'm curious how you feel about chatting. I mean chatting as in exchanging text lines online, not verbal chit chat.

I can't stand chatting. I find it inefficient, tedious, time consuming esp. in cases where the opposite end either is a slow typist and that it can work against a person when spelling and vocab isn't their forte.

I'd much rather talk to someone on the phone or use a voice/video function or meet them in person than to sit on the PC for hours to get across in 2 hours what can be said in 10 minutes.

What's your take?

sweet_saucy2008: If it is someone you are chatting with on a fairly regular basis you can learn a lot about their personalities. How they spell and their grammar also indicates who educated they are.

Does that me when you have a typo like this one above, you are less educated or intelligent?

confused

Oh, Larry!laugh rolling on the floor laughing laugh rolling on the floor laughing

Yes, there is so much more out there than just book learned intelligence! I took several years of writing and journalism in college so I am a stickler about grammar and spelling for myself, but I have accepted the fact that mature men, in particular, don't type well. It's not a skill that they learned in high school with all us girls. They were busy in wood shop and print shop and all those other guy things.

Intelligence has nothing to do with degrees, I have worked for people with lots of "book learnin'" that had no idea how to do the job or manage the folks who did it. I have seen people with advanced degrees who can spew out facts and symbols but were incapable of comprehending another person's truth, or analyzing ideas that opposed those they already held.

At the same time, I have seen people who dropped out of high school design and build beautiful homes, raise brilliant and well behaved children, become compassionate and loving partners. It's all in what we do with what we have.hug

I prefer face to face (as long as she doesn't have stinky breath of course - goes without saying really)

What takes two hours 'chatting' in pms...

What takes 10 minutes on the phone...

It only takes 30 seconds in real life! blushing smile lips

Goddess4u: chatting is the next best thing to meeting and if the other party is miles and miles away then it just has to do

Face to face, flesh to flesh would be much better, though

I can't chat flesh to flesh....... there is a limit to my multi-tasking abilities! sigh

I dislike it too, for the same reasons you gave. Communicating is also not so spontaneous as when you can hear a voice and see the person. Voices carry emotions which are infectious, I would much rather laugh out loud with friends than repeatedly write LOL LOL or use emoticons.

Skype is my preferred way of keeping in touch with family and friends across the globe.

I enjoy IM'ing as a nature step toward learning and getting to know someone. Nothing beats face-to-face meetings, but internet dating is different.

Thanks everyone for your comments.

Skype is a good one. I used to use Yahoo IM until the updated versions shoved too much advertising down the PC, so now it's skype, though the quality of the voice on PC-PC isn't leaves a bit to be desired.
