Zellarrone1: True, some of them don't like the commitments and isolations of having their own home/ living alone etc.

A lot of the homeless are mentally ill or suffering from some sort of illness. We should be providing shelters, medical care and half way houses to help them get onto their feet, find employement and eventually find a place of their own.
Those suffering from health issues should get the medical care needed. I think it's disgusting that will will let someone suffer simply because they have no home. It is inhumaine.
Tonight in Dublin it will be -4 degrees Celsius, or 24 degrees fahrenheit and there will be ill men women and children on the streets.

imsophie1: Many will look at the homeless, but few actually see them. Each of those faces tells a story. Usually a sad story.

I think in today's world people are embarrassed by the very existence of the homeless and that embarrassment creates a form of fear. We are not able to process or deal with that particular fear, so we try to ignore the entire situation. We turn those less fortunate into statistics. It makes us feel better.

People accuse the homeless of choosing to live that way. Some do, but most were caught up in situations beyond their control. The struggle to improve their circumstances simply became too great and they lost all hope. When you hit rock bottom in your life, it is nearly impossible to restore your confidence and a positive image of yourself (giving you the tools to create something better for yourself) without some kind of loving assistance. How good can you feel about yourself when you only hear degrading things about yourself? Over time you begin to believe those degrading things about yourself.

In today's disposable world of instant gratification life is all about "me, me, me". I've seen so many people who are not thankful for what they have, but choose to put down others for what they themselves do not have.

Don't just look; see.
Don't just listen; hear.

AMENyay

Another observation I've made over the years is that the better off someone is, the more they will ignore those "beneath" them. Some of the greatest givers I've seen have been what the upper classes would consider "the less fortunate".

Giving doesn't have to be all about money. Giving of oneself is sometimes more valuable than the giving of material goods.

In the end, having a life filled with money and possessions will mean little if we haven't made the effort to help anyone else.

i see them alot. my dear friend is living in his car with his dog, they come here to escape dangerous temps, bathe, and stock up on water.

in my area the unemployment rate is very high. in my small town they have suspended vagrancy laws, but offer no shelters. it is well known that there are whole families living in vehicles, and in some abandoned barns. the homeless actually are quite visible and tend to stay in one area of town, they've created a little community. it's fairly common to see individuals as well as school and church groups venturing in to share food, water, blankets and coats, etc.

we are doing a woefully inadequate job of addressing homelessness in this country. i am proud of the meager but very real kindness and generousity of my community, most of whom are struggling to keep their homes while supporting those in need.

I deserve no special recognition for anything I do. I only do what feels right to me. In one fell swoop several years ago I went from having lots of money and "things" to having nothing and being homeless. I learned the hard way that all the things I had really meant very little. In fact, they meant more to those around me than they meant to me. Of everything I lost, the only thing I wish I could get back is all the family photos I spent years taking. Especially the ones from when my daughters were growing up. I have few reminders of my middle daughter's life and can no longer look forward to making future memories with her. She died 02-21-06.

I SEE them. I cannot help all of them but I always have a little chat with someone approching for begging, or a hello sign to those I meet every day.
And I am very proud to say that the King of my country, Belgium, just offered 2 appartments he owns, to homeless families during this cold and snowy winter.

Keeneland: I think it is one of our biggest shames that in rich western countries there are people hungry, in need of medical care with no roof over their head. When you look at some of the things our governments waste billions on it sickens me. These are people like you and me who are sick or that life has dealt a bad hand and anyone of us could find ourselves in their position in certain circunstances.
I always try to help when i can but unfortunately i can't give to everyone i see. And i don't care what they spend the money on when i geive it to them because if i had no home on a cold winter night i know i would love a bottle of something to warm me up and help me sleep.

Governments seem to duck for cover when it comes to Mental Illness and people with disabilities. In Oz they have this policy that the mentally ill should be intergrated into the community, good concept, but that needs money spent on support for these people to actually live alone. Others really need to be supervised and be in Community living styled accomodation. Also, re post, no one should have to live on the streets, young or old, third world conditions in our supposedly civilised western society.

Quite alot of the homeless people in the UK suffer mental disabilities and often end up on the streets rather than being treated. In iraq you see alot of homeless people, children too, whom carve out a life for themselves somehow, building shanty houses out of whatever material they can find.

This is always sad to see. We have it on St.Thomas. You can see that they are suffering from some sort of illness. Some of them are really scary, they wander out into the streets like they want to be hit. sigh

Yes, I see them all the time and it breaks my heart. I even took a tour of our local drop in centre to see what they are doing to help the homeless. I am a big advocator of getting affordable housing, proper clothing, and food. Not many days go by when I don't think of the homeless. Wish I could do more but after being unemployed for 6 months, I am trying to recoup but when I do I will more donations clothing and money.

Some people don't want to look into a homeless persons eyes, because if they do...they might change.

" Do You Ever See The Homeless?"

I've only been homeless once.....hard to see yourself without a mirror.

I know one homeless guy in the city where I live in the UK.

I often speak to him. He's an interesting guy to chat to.

I try and ignore the 'fumes' and do my best not to stare at bits of food caught in his beard

He's a human being..... NOT happy being homeless, but not wanting to live in a house either.

I have been involved in "Street Ministry" for the past 20 years.
Fed and clothed the homeless in Fort Worth, Texas for 15 years.
I have brought hundreds of them into my home to give them a chance to get on their feet.

I started an outreach in my community, giving food and clothing to families in need. The whole community participated. Those who could not give, we gave to them. I personally paid electric bills and water bills for those who could not afford to pay them themselves. I have seen many tears of JOY flow, expressing gratitude and made many new friends.

They are people, just like we are. No one of us is any better than the next. God created us all and we are all His children.
We must show love and compassion to others. Be a listening ear, a helping hand, a shoulder to cry on, we can BE the DIFFERENCE.

I have seen many lives change and receive HOPE, through loving acts of Kindness.

God Bless you ALL!!

Taking the Love of Jesus to where it is most desperately needed and hardest to find. HL

Aramis734: And that really pisses me off. Those men and women are willing to put on that uniform and die for this nation if called on to do so, yet we thank them by letting them live in the gutter.

What's the statistic? 1 in 3 homeless are military veterans?

Disgusting.

I totally agree with you. We have a hugh food bank drive just for our Veterans. I just wish the elderly and Veterans had a whole lot more subsidies than we give them. The cost of living is so darn high and they just can't make ends meet. Yet we have our greedy oil and gas people just raising and raising prices to line their pockets with money while the average person here can barely afford to buy food. I don't get it personally. All about the greed and it seems very few care who suffers for the almighty dollar. blues

It really doesn't make any sense, does it?

I don't know about anyone else, but the last group I'd want to piss off or mistreat would be the men and women who know how to fight a war.
