Halloween is a Druid holiday that represents the dying of the Earth. Being a Druid myself, I celebrate Samhain (Old Irish for Summer's End) every year. During Samhain, it is believed that that gateway between our world and the next are close enough together that the spirits of those who've passed can roam the earth. During this time period, ceremonies (both large and even individual) to become closer with ones ancestors and to acknowledge the Goddess in her Crone stage. There is much more to it than just that, but to know more, do some research. It's always good to learn.

I don't know how giving out treats to children for free is a "money making franchise" that "americans" have made.
It is not a holiday, we are not off work, the banks and post offices are open, kids are in school, etc. It's just a fun time for kids and adults for that matter. Many have get togethers, parties, kids and adults alike and many dress up in some sort of costume. It can be a horror costume or a cartoon character and just a made up one.

That is true and thank you for the advise to make a research and learn.
Look up Samhain, Day of the Dead and All Souls Day. That will explain the origins of Halloween. For me, it is an excuse to wear a costume and a day to spoil kids. It used to be an excuse to run around at night and get candy. I have a cemetery in the front yard made from scrap wood. The local kids seem to love it. It's almost free. The wood was just laying around. The paint was probably under 30.00. And the great thing is that its reusable every year. The first time I made one, the people down the street made a better one. Then I lost my first cemetery. I made a better one with better scrap wood. The people down the street moved out. Now there are two houses in nearby towns that also have cemeteries. It was a lot of fun making it and a lot of fun seeing people react to it too.
bestbefore: In Spain this a religious festival and All Hallows November 1st is a day when people go to the graves of their loved ones and pay their respects.
In Spain there is an excuse for a festival / holiday practically every month ! No wonder their economy is stuffed. What money the UK contributes to the EU pot, Spain takes out ....
Here in Southamerica we haven't celebrated Halloween for so long.,. may be less than 10 years ...
I really don't care if it just a big bussiness and stuff... the important thing for me it's seeing my lil one's face all happy and excited about the costume and "trick or treat" ("Dulce o Travesura" in spanish :))
She's gonna be a panther this year LOL... As long as she's happy... I don't think that kids on costumes asking for candy be something wrong AT ALL
It began over 2000 yrs ago with people known as the Celtics. They lived in what is today England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. This was also the beginning of the Celtic new year, a time to give thanks to the sun god for the harvest.
It was a pagan belief that on one night of the year the souls of the dead return to their original homes, there to be entertained with food. If food and shelter were not provided, these evil spirits would cast spells and cause havoc toward those failing to fulfill their requests.
Samhain as it is knowing, is all about the spirits so we must honer those who have passed, its a druid or ancient way to help those that have passed over so we celebrate it in there honer.
the druid order isn't new but ancient honer this Halloween by given thanks to those who have passed..

Hi RDM ,
Spain is on a par with Chile as being one of the most corrupt countries in the world. For many years the construction industry has dominated Spain with it's "bent builders, mayors, lawyers etc,and now the bubble has burst. Banesto bank was the largest bank in Spain for years until the "president " ripped off the bank and that's just one of the stories of theft.
The latest "squeeze" is people who are buying cheap property and then having said property revalued by the land registry and the buyers having to pay thousands back in taxes!
I had to fight like mad to get my retention tax back when I sold my property in Spain last year, yet it's still a place people want to live! . 7 years was enough for me!

HotrodLarrys: It is a Pagan Holiday, a worship of Evil Spirits....
It has been Countterfeited, to humany as something Good, and USE the Children.... To Help falsify its true meaning, (Demonic) of fun...
Then the parents Decieved from the truth, allow their kids to Participahe in it... as a Good thing, a day of giving...WRONG!
It is Trickory....Lucifers Fallen angels (DEMONS) decieving Humanity.....
Look it up in an Encyclopedia, or google it, and see if I am telling the Truth!
I dare ya....
that isn't true at all as there is no such thing as a 'devil' OR LUCIFER that's christian make believe or faith, Halloween has more to do with energy of spirits and not christen devils as that's noting to do with pagan holidays as Halloween is pagan belongs to that faith and there is no devil in paganism or hell or heaven try to understand what it is first and not by some christian outlook, if you read what it is as paganism you'll see what it is you cant look at it with christian eyes nor anything they write about it because they believe all is evil anything that holds no jesus is evil such delusion they live in, there is both negative and positive in this world the negative is apart of life as well that makes the world balance in all respects..
the Holiday observed on October 31, the eve of All Saints' Day. Its pagan origins can be traced to the Celtic festival of Samhain, celebrated in ancient England and Ireland to mark the beginning of the Celtic new year. The souls of the dead were supposed to revisit their homes on Samhain eve, and witches, goblins, black cats, and ghosts were said to roam abroad. The night was also thought to be the most favorable time for divinations concerning marriage, luck, health, and death. The pagan observances influenced the Christian festival of All Hallows' Eve, celebrated on the same date. The holiday was gradually secularized and was introduced into the U.S. by the late 19th century. Still associated with evil spirits and the supernatural, it is celebrated by children in costume who gather candy by ringing doorbells and calling out “trick or treat,” “trick” referring to the pranks and vandalism that are also part of the Halloween tradition.
Every year I dress up in a different costume to answer the door to the trick-or-treaters. One year, I dressed all in black, got on the horse and acted out as a Headless Horse(wo)man. Scared the bejeebers out of the kids and some parents. This year I'm dressing up as a fortune teller.
Our yard becomes a cemetery too and hiding behind the headstones to give the kids a fright always brings a giggle once they realize the "ghosts" are giving out goodies.
One year I forgot to buy some candy because work had been such a bear of late, I ended up handing out my stash of chocolate granola bars.
