jampet: while I have done both- I think drink affects society in general more- smoking can directly affect the person doing it, and has been shown to affect others- i think massively more damage is done by excesses of alcohol- .... physical effects on your own body, random violence towards strangers, death by drink driving to you and others, domestic violence..... the list is endless- smoking can cause problems for you and those closely associated with you over the long term... but you only have to spend one night in any A&E to see the problems alcohol can cause instantly for you and others, when taken in irresponsible amounts.
As many have said - neither is good. But speaking only for myself. I voted that drinking is worse. I never drink, haven't in years and years now. But I do smoke. My Grandad smoked every day of his life and never drank at all and lived to be 99, so hopefully I've enough of his genetics that it'll work out.
