Serious off road biking is demanding on the body uphill, demanding on your skill and nerve downhill.

I would think it depended on how much effort you were putting into it. We bike a lot in the summer but always go slow and easy. Snowshoeing seems like better cardio for me even though we don't go as far or out for as long.
I've seen kick boxers that were going full speed for close to an hour that must have been burning calories at a super high rate.
Zumba burns between 800-1000 calories an hour. It is never boring. Between the music and the dancing, you can't help feeling happy after this work out.
Running and cross-country skiing are by far the most effective calorie burners.
Swimming would be good also, but swimming is so exhausting (especially if you're not used to it) that most people cannot do it long enough to reap the benefits. Swimming as a weight loss or calorie burning exercise is something you would have to work up to.
