Yes, Lazly - You are to be considered a product on a store shelf.
I think of this as attractiveness and how much we each might value different characteristics.
- Intelligent/Wise - I value this highly. - Patient/Understanding - also highly valued. - Formal education - nice to have but I don't value this as much as many others do. - Energetic - again, nice to have but as long as someone has their laziness under control, being highly energetic isn't something I value.
We don't have formal lists (well, I don't anyways ) ... But people do apply a sort of rating system to others, whether they want to call it this or not.
Now - "Product XY" - Where should we place your barcode?
This is fine... instinct is our friend... but it can mislead us at times (just as too much thinking can leave us confused)...
So friendship can grow... as you get to know someone... as you learn more about them... you might like them more or perhaps less... while the same thing is happening in their minds as they get to know you... a sort of natural flow to this, right?
And the quest is for the ideal 'you' (if I'm understanding this right).
Do you feel a little inner drive to improve yourself? Do you respond constructively?
(My questions are someone rhetorical... your blogs and comments on CS show the answers I think... that you're moving in a positive direction... )
Becca - We're all rather imperfect I think ... the question I'd have is whether you feel any motivation to improve?
Some seem to feel it and some don't... some feel capable of improving and some just think about reasons not to improve.
Also - some feel they must become a new person or 'why bother?' ... I think more success happens when you make smaller changes and think of improvement as a journey to be taken one step at a time.
I think you're saying that the finish line is always moving so we can never really get there. Very true.
So I wonder if some just don't want to try... they just live day after day and don't worry about personal improvement or lofty goals like self-actualization.
What traits do you value in people?
Do you value hard work? Do you value pride and self-confidence? Do you value kindness and caring for others? What else?
Red - I'm not recommending a tally board ... but I do think we look at ourselves and others in this way. Basically, it's our ego... and our inner voices... Do we feel good about ourselves? If two guys were interested in you, would you feel more attracted to the one who is nicer or taller or younger or more educated?
Would you like to find someone to admire? Perhaps someone who will admire you?
It's just another way to think about what "attractive" is and how our personal outlook affects this.
Or we could visit the mall where the Canadians come to shop... or the other mall where the Canadians come to shop... (seems strange that our prices are better... though I have heard the variety of goods (clothing mostly?) might be the reason).
Seriously though... a walk along the lake in the evening ... that would be one of my first choices. Perhaps catch one of the waterfront concerts during the Summer.
American football - The fans start fights with each other mostly just in the seats at the ends of the stadium (the don't get to see the game very well but they are very close to the beer vendors!).
European/etc football (soccer) - All the fans fight.
(actually rather sad some of the events that have happened )
Gratuity (tip) ... "don't forget to tip the waitress/waiter" ... in the US, the typical amount given to a service person is 15% of the bill.
If your dinner bill is $20, you would tip the waiter $3.
This is similar for a taxi driver, hair dresser (stylist, barber), and so on. Like most things here, this isn't formal... more or less is given by some but most follow 15% as being what is normal and expected of them.
Okay ... I read up on reverse-osmosis last night ... not quite as wonderful as I thought ... basically you pump water through an extremely fine filter ... so it takes a good amount of pressure and you don't get much water for the effort needed ... and the filters still need to be changed ... and they are more expensive than the charcoal filters.
Charcoal filters will remove chlorine I believe... and that's used in water to kill microorganisms ... I know the water here tastes much better during the Winter when less chlorine is needed.
Of course --- Ariel --- there in Sofia --- with water coming from the nearby mountains ... makes us all a bit jealous.
No excuses! ... And ambition leads to more ambition ... right?!!
Summer - Life moves right along, doesn't it? No guarantee for tomorrow and the list of yesterdays just gets longer.
Something I think is good for our mental health is to manage how busy our life becomes. It's easy to get involved in many activities to feel like you're doing more but having every day pre-planned just makes them go by faster (in my opinion).
Appreciate the time of life you're currently living... whatever time it happens to be. That's my outlook.
Firas - Interesting thoughts on the vibration machine. There is something to just moving around... to shake, jump, simply move every part of the body... loosen it up... perhaps aid blood flow... Interesting.
Learning good habits ... I think people are starting to get better at this... from a generation where food was rationed to one where it was/is plentiful (but often at the expense of good nutrition) to one where the good and bad are understood better ... and modern society begins to find its balance ...
Sleep --- yes... difficult to allow ourselves enough at times... hope you continue to work this out, Shay.
To my parents' generation, Sleep = Lazy... so this is what I was taught (and have needed to un-learn).
Lazly - The challenge with the pitcher is that the filter should be changed every 3 months (about $7 each). It's still less expensive than bottled water but it's something else to keep track of... to remember to buy... to be thrown in the trash... better, but not ideal.
The idea of a micro-filter screen (the reverse-osmosis idea) seems less practical currently... but it interests me.
Hopefully you'll find good options for your drinking water!
As I mentioned about vegetables, I like fruit raw as well. Though a treat like this (or apple pie with vanilla ice cream! yum!) is nice to have occasionally.
Parti! --- No SKITE for Parti! ... um, okay ... won't be skiting ... or Skyping ... or typing ...
But yes! Made it this far... had to peddle up the long hill now can pick up my feet and coast!
Well ... not really, actually ... sort of seems like it's all more work ... but I think we get to chose the kind of work ... like walking the golf course rather than painting the walls at work...
Hopefully there are some good habits in there for you too! ... Clearly some good mental health in your sense of humor! ... I think ... ... at least when I understand the joke.
Okay ... reverse-osmosis water filters ... (where's 10k on this science stuff?) ...
I'm fortunate - I drink water directly from the sink. There's a charcoal-filtered ("Brita" brand) pitcher in the fridge but 'city water' as we call it, is clean enough to drink.
Hi morge - Nice pic, btw. (yes, I saw Calli's blog)
Sleep - yes, thank you. I've had this 3 hour wake-up thing going on lately... I get back to sleep but wake about about every 3 hours ... part of the seasonal changes for me I think (and deliberate effort to get more exercise).
Hopefully you've been sleeping well too... haven't see you on CS as 'the last European to go to bed' too often lately.
(and for people who cause us stress... they probably need the same thing but can't bring themselves to ask for it or to allow it... but that's for another day and another blog)
And of course! ... The health of our outlook! Good habits in our personality help us shed stress! Laughter is the obvious one but there are many more........
Weeping - "Half time at the bingo" (?) ... Perhaps a reference to the ladies talking amongst themselves here ... Personally, I'm enjoying seeing both (three) sides of this conversation. People encouraging each other... quite pleasant to be around, isn't it?
Lazly - Teeth... Genetics... Good hygiene when young... whether there should be fluoride in the public water supply (we do that here... at least I think we still do ) ... a difficult subject for many.
Lots of challenges in this area... for most of us... some are more fortunate (genetics and good lessons from parents)... we do what we can and what we need to.
(the value of antiseptic mouthwash... wish I knew about that when I was young)
The connection between mind-body-spirit ... something else I think we're just starting to understand. (though I'm sure many would say that some have understood it for centuries... I think the group awareness and understanding is still quite young... my own understanding is still quite young )
Btw - This would be part of my argument against government (institutionalized) healthcare ... there is a world full of alternatives, education and prevention that needs to be embraced as well and I think giving charge of this to the politicians works against the greater good.
Just noticed... a hazard of good hosting... trying to read/respond in order... and the conversation is way ahead of me! Keep going! I'll catch up eventually.
As life gets busy... perhaps with a family and a mortgage to pay for... it's tough to make play/sports a priority (even on the weekend)... that's a key part of the challenge... when responsibilities dictate more of your life... it's a trap that catches many.
I'm glad you have your current habits! Do you think you'll be able to hang on to them 10 years from now?
Lazly - One of the younger folks here who already has the right habits.
Stress ... A hidden factor ... Some bad things that happen with body chemistry and brain health ... something science is just starting to understand, I think.
Calories - Fewer burned so fewer should be consumed ... I know I continue to try to find the balance ... when I'm more active, my body asks for more food... so I try to answer with water or raw vegetables (I prefer them raw )... but this just distracts my hunger for a short time ... the balance can be challenging.
Nice list! And the joy of using the dancing elephant emoticon!
Personal Quality
Hi Jakarta!Hi Marsh Up late on the weekend it seems.
"Up to par" ... Are you thinking of someone who is about as intelligent and wise as yourself or perhaps someone who is even a bit smarter?
