RE: Children - ages 0 to 12 - How do you treat them?

At last we agree on something.

I think you're absolutely right. Most young children react in a positive way when given the same respect you would give to adults.
Over the years I've worked with many young people and have always found this to be the case.

RE: Perhaps we need to keep an eye on India and Pakistan shooting down planes

I have found the source of this mis-information in the past and in fact posted it on here. It's a bit late in the day right now for me to go searching, but I'll see what I can find maybe tomorrow.
I do remember mentioning this to a long serving Buddhist nun at the Manjushri centre.
It's actually the world centre of the Kadampa tradition and they have over 1200 centres worldwide. She concluded it was a misinterpretation, that confirmed it for me.
I also spoke to the Lama at my local Dechen centre when he last visited, Lama Jampa Thaye, he is greatly respected in the Dechan tradition, and other traditions for that matter.
It wasn't long after I'd first heard it suggested. He said he that old claim had been thoroughly discredited long ago.
But, I know I've previously found how it came about, I'll have another look sometime soon.
Off to bed now.

RE: Perhaps we need to keep an eye on India and Pakistan shooting down planes

That would, if it were true, discredit the entire point of Buddhism.

A bit like Jesus saying on the cross, "I'm still not entirely sure who my Dad is."

RE: Perhaps we need to keep an eye on India and Pakistan shooting down planes

That quote gets banded about quite often, but it's a misinterpretation of what he said....apparently.

RE: I feel like I am dying of depression

Taking a spiritual path may help you to some degree, but if you don't have right guidance it could easily make your situation worse.
You need professional help, maybe alongside mindfulness classes and the correct type of meditation practice.

Below is some good information regarding Buddhism and the treatment of PTSD.

WHAT CAN BUDDHISM DO FOR MENTAL ILLNESS?

From Freud to today, the philosophy and teachings of Buddhism (and the Buddha) have been a reference for understanding the nature of the mind. Many of our modern therapeutic theories and practices are rooted or informed by Buddhist practices. To that end, it is very tempting for a soldier returning from Iraq, wanting to avoid dealing with a therapist, to seek a Buddhist temple to solve his PTSD problem. It is also tempting for those who have seen the quality of their lives improve from Buddhist practice to endorse Buddhism as the only solution necessary.

Unfortunately, someone with significant PTSD cannot just rewrite their trauma away in meditation alone. A monastic is not trained to understand the nature of that soldier’s issues. A temple is not a drug and alcohol rehabilitation facility that understands the nature of addiction, just as a Catholic church isn’t.

A good Buddhist practice can be a cornerstone to a foundation of good mental health, but it cannot be the entire foundation. The Buddha talks of the three poisons: aversion, clinging, and delusion. Those who are in severe mental distress should not avoid seeking mental professional help. They should not cling to absolutism of Buddhism being the panacea for all things. They should not create the delusion that they are able to see the whole self without assistance when they are ill.

I want to make it clear that not all monastics are untrained in mental illness. I am a Buddhist minister with training, and there are others who are well trained and educated in neuro-science, psychology, etc.
also want to make it clear that not all mental health providers are the same. If you feel that your mental health provider is not creating a good therapeutic relationship or providing the care you feel appropriate, speak to them about it. You may need to work with more than one mental health provider before you find the one that is able to help you work through your issues successfully.

Finally, speak with your mental health provider on how you may use the strengths of your Buddhist practice to support your mental well-being. Spiritual and mindfulness practices are often significant tools to have on the path to mental wellness.

RE: Religion / Philosophy / Spirituality

I've just finished the night with my new religion...5rhythms. ......head banger

Three hours of unrestricted movement and dance. The first two rhythms build up slowly to the wild third rhythm of chaos, then back to stillness the last rhythm after the fourth rhythm, lyrical.
I might be drenched in sweat but I've not an ounce of stress or tension left in my body.

Wonderful.....praise the lord!!!

RE: Are you happy - Can it be better - With what?

If I "don't know nothing," I must know something.....double negative.

What I do know is, you're aggressive response to my post was quite uncalled for.
It's an attitude I rarely come across these days too often. But, at least it gives me the chance to practice tolerance and understanding.
Not entirely sure what Buddhism has to do with it, but I'm certainly not going to let it concern me.

RE: Are you happy - Can it be better - With what?

That's lovey EX, I'm pleased for you.

RE: Are you happy - Can it be better - With what?

You reay can't deal with someone with a different opinion, can you.

RE: Are you happy - Can it be better - With what?

Happiness isn't something to look for, something you can keep once you've found it.
If you were continuously happy, you wouldn't understand the meaning of happiness.
Quite often what gives us happiness one day can be the source of suffering the day after.

RE: I feel like I am dying of depression

This is a story of repeated trauma and quite clearly the OP is in need of professional help.
You don't have to have been in a war zone or experienced a catastrophic event to suffer from PTSD, repeated trauma over a period of years can easily trigger this condition.
In fact, in some cases the trauma has been buried deep in the unconscious mind from early childhood, only to reappear in the form of PTSD even though the individual has no recollection of the event(s.)
I suspect the OP is possibly beyond self help and really needs professional guidance with this. But for anyone interested in the subject of PTSD, I recommend a great read on the topic...

RE: Tax's dog in Germany

Slight correction, original price 37 1/2p so the price came down fractionally in 1984.

RE: Tax's dog in Germany

They were abolished in 1987.
The price was originally 7s 6d, (seven shillings and six pence)or 35 1/2p. This was changed to 37p when the halfpenny was withdrawn in 1984

RE: The Awakening

That's possibly what has happened
The 'I' that is you has woken up and is becoming centralised, just like all the other 'I's' on the planet.
But you dont remember your last 'I" although very rarely some do, that's well documented.
After all, you can't wake up if you haven't been to sleep and can't go to sleep if you weren't previously awake.

Just a little thing to ponder upon...conversing

Went to my local climbing wall last night with a woman I introduced to the sport a couple of years ago.
I struggled to do the routes at the standard she's now climbing. I'm going to have to get some serious practise in...blues

I attended her three day teachings a few years ago, it was powerful stuff which made quite an impression on me.
The link above is a small vid where she speaks the words I've posted.

RE: Generating Criminals?

That's true, but there are very good reasons for that. The fact is though, the prison systems that provide genuine rehabilitation and support on offenders release, have the least incidence of reoffending.
Of course people who have committed the most heinous of crimes should be encarsarated for a length of time that reflects their wrongdoing and that time should not in any way be pleasant.

RE: Generating Criminals?

So far, so good, that's how it's working for me, I grew up in a tough part of Inner city Manchester and still live there, so, ive seen and experienced plenty of ' the dark side' of life.
But this isn't about you or me, it's about how we move forward as a society. We just have different ideas, it's all open to discussion, it's not about labelling each other.

RE: Generating Criminals?

That's a shame, I guess we must of had very different life experiences.

sigh

RE: Generating Criminals?

How can taking away someone's freedom be seen as a reward?

So, have you ever been to prison, or visited someone in prison? And i mean a 'real' prison.

RE: Generating Criminals?

I think there are plenty of civilised societies in this world, ones that don't see retribution as a part of punishment.

RE: Generating Criminals?

Have you ever been to prison, or visited someone in prison?

RE: Perhaps we need to keep an eye on India and Pakistan shooting down planes

I've spent time in both India and Pakistan, far from finding veiled hostility, I found wonderful welcoming people .
There nothing like first hand experience to see behind the propaganda.

RE: Generating Criminals?

Indeed, but are you ok with that, would you like them to be less civilised?
