Yeah, Claire, he was in that movie with Mel Gibson about the American Revolution - The Patriot, I think - you know, Claire, where the Americans kicked British butt? . One helluva movie, I thought.
Of course I understood the metaphor, Jeffrey, but I couldn't resist the siren's call of yet another lame pun. I actually liked the point you were making, btw... Don't think I'll ever ask you to make lemonade for me, however.
Good one, NaturAL. That's the logical quandary those who believe altruism is a panacea must face. I actually wrote a short story on that subject that *almost* got published decades ago: the idea was a society where everyone wished to serve everyone else, and their messiah was someone who preached selfishness (in a twist on the Jesus myth). (It would've been published if I'd taken the editor's suggestion to soften what he viewed as a pro-selfishness/anti-Christianity theme).
Same with me, D. I'm nekkid except for my cowboy hat (or bandanna). I figure if there's a fire or something, I need to be prepared to be quickly decent in public.
That might be the right thing to do, D, but I think the basic way to respond is to...relax, and understand conflict is inevitable. It's how you handle it - staying respectful, not losing sight of your affection for the other person - that will bring you back together...assuming you want to come back together...
Maybe this time you could pose with a panther...and nothing else, Blue Eyed. Just a thought... (a black panther would really set off you blond hair and blue eyes, I think.)
That's a politico-ethical issue, Twinself - how much individual autonomy is proper in a society? - nothing to do with the question of free will, which concerns the nature of human capabilities.
I think he's beens studying at Wikipedia, since those paragraphs were pasted from there.
Otherwise, I share your views about insight versus information. Still, you have to establish an overview of the salient questions before attempting an analysis of them - insightful or otherwise.
Thanks, Ray. Perhaps you didn't notice, but I actually compared you to Zarathustra at one point a few weeks back - I said something sort of insulting like: "You remind me of Zarathrusta with a really bad hangover," or something to that effect. But seriously, you do strike me as something of a Nietzschean character, and I can't help but be charmed by that since he's one of my favorite philosophers (my favorite philosopher-writer! God, his prose...) I also greatly appreciate any serious thinker, and you're one of them. Nietzschean
I've been interested in philosophy since childhood, and tend to have friends who share that interest (some are academics, some not). I'm a lover of ideas, but have no formal training in philosophy.
Nothing to worry about at all, Claayyeer. I've already done it and come back, and I'm fine, just fine (though I could've done without the screws in my head).
Yeah, my son believed that silent, fast-moving triangular craft that he and his friends watched closeup was military. We lived about 50 miles from Travis Airforce Base. I asked some of the pilots there (I worked for a few of them) if they knew anything about experimental aircraft being tested in the area. They replied that if they told me they'd have to kill me...in fact, after working on their pianos, they were pretty much of the mind to do that anyway (another good reason to retire from my former profession )
Yeah, Constanza, that missile-like object has been analyzed at some length by some of us in the "UFO community." Nothing definitive has been discovered thus far.
RE: Remember ...
Unfortunately, Uli, the full Moon brings out my crazy side. I'd better lay off the cheap beer for the duration...
