Why is it so difficult for people with opposing points of view to have a rational discussion without it turning into name calling, rude remarks and immature behaviour?

Some people just p**s others off with their moaning and whinging on every thread, no matter what the subject they manage to turn it around so that its about themselves. Thats when the difficuly arises.

Agree to disagree!!! Of course!! Totally possible!!! Justa s long as you know that I'm only humouring you and I AM right!!
Nah! Seriously ... sometimes it's a little difficult to remember one's manners and emotional maturity when someone acts in a totally purposely obtuse, norrow minded, self-absorbed or outrageously disrespectful way ... generally, towards one or towards people who we know don't deserve it ...

I think you're being silly and ridiculous to even suggest that, JB!
I knew a guy like that,he was an IRK to SMIRK type of guy. He'd disagree with everything I SAID,NO MATTER WHAT,just to get under my skin, and in all honesty, everytime I see him,I'm tempted to slap the lips off his face.
mindfful: culturally many people dont grow up in that atmosphere they come to understand conversation as confrontation its a bummer
I think this is a large part of the problem with communication these days. Kids aren't learning how to discourse with others. It's either a bunch of fighting and arguing. Or on the flip side, they avoid conflict to the extent that they become passive-aggressive.
