What I was taught regarding the use of English many years ago when I did my exams was that in actual use the average is 4.79 letters per word (5) for non academics-and approximately 80% are between 2 and 7 letters long:
The dictionary states the distribution for distinct words counting each word only once regardless of how many times it is mentioned, the average is 7 to 8 letters - where 80% are between 4 and 10 letters long:
