Adding to the first few posts, Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush with a wonderful cover of Roy Harper's Another Day. Great lyrics, beautifully sung but never commercially released.

" Really my dear I can't see what we fear, sat here with ourselves in between us."

RE: What does God mean to you?

It's a very old parable that has crossed many religions but recently in the 19th century American poet John Godfrey Saxe created a poem, with a final verse that explains that the elephant is a metaphor for God.
Many different metaphors have been linked to this story for well over two thousand years.

In the Canki Sutta the Buddha uses it to describe sectarian quarrels....

"When the blind men had each felt a part of the elephant, the king went to each of them and said to each: "Well, blind man, have you seen the elephant? Tell me, what sort of thing is an elephant?"

"O how they cling and wrangle, some who claim
For preacher and monk the honored name!
For, quarreling, each to his view they cling.
Such folk see only one side of a thing."

RE: Baggage

I have to disagree with you there jac. The very nature of depression, a pressing down of the psyche and ptsd for so many has exactly the opposite effect of personal growth and and self empowerment. Some will never recover, some will take their own lives, some will spend years on medication, many will feel worthless and many will develop complexes.
But, it could be said that, paradoxically, in most instances some degree of trauma or suffering is necessary for growth.

RE: Baggage

Perhaps "weigh heavy" isn't the best term for what I meant. Some will find growth in adversity, some will suffer a 'pressing down' of the soul or psyche. Trauma can bring a greater understanding of our human condition and consequently lead to personal growth, or it can lead to a pressing down, which we call depression, or even ptsd. Everyone suffers trauma to varying degrees in their lives and everyone is affected from those experiences, some in a good way, some not so good.
Maybe another word for baggage could be trauma. Either way, we are all a product of our history, we all have 'baggage' and personal growth is often moulded by it.

RE: Baggage

I agree entirely. Traumatic or distressing events can weigh heavy on one persons life but can be an opportunity for growth and learning for another.

RE: Old ladies of nowadays.

I blame the parents...scold

RE: Baggage

Could there be 'good' baggage, or do you think any baggage has to be bad?

RE: Rising cases

The flu dodn't disappear in 2020, the number of cases drastically reduced, but it wasn't magic, the reason was quite obvious to any clear thinking person.
Maybe of you can't work it out for yourself you could do some unbiased research to find out why the numbers dropped so dramatically. Unless of course your conformation bias won't allow you to believe anything if it's not a conspiricy theory.

But your wife perhaps?....laugh

RE: Pets

Your dog will always love you more than your wife. To prove this try locking both of them in the boot of your car for a couple of hours and then see which one still loves you when you let them out.

"Selective exposure is a theory within the practice of psychology, often used in media and communication research, that historically refers to individuals' tendency to favor information which reinforces their pre-existing views while avoiding contradictory information. Selective exposure has also been known and defined as "congeniality bias" or "confirmation bias" in various texts throughout the years."

RE: Promotional Offers of the Mid- to Late-Twentieth Century...

Green shield stamps became so popular, for a while they could be used as currency where i lived. I forget the rate, but they were easy to turn into cash. Of course the amount people would pay was well below the value of any goods the stamps could be exchanged for, but for many it was a way of raising a bit of extra cash.
