RE: Say Anything

Sounds about right.

RE: What's the difference between......

I was told about the use of flammable instead of inflammable during a safety course not too long ago. The course was for a CSCS card which is needed for access on any construction site in the UK. It seems that labelling materials 'inflammable' is no longer allowed, it now has to read flammable.
I guess it makes sense.

RE: What's the difference between......

"Inactive" means not active; ""incapable" means not capable; "inseparable" means not separable; and on and on the examples go. It doesn't make sense that "inflammable" means flammable.

"During World War II, Allied leaders throughout Europe urged the American companies manufacturing munitions to use only "flammable" when labelling the explosives being sent to Europe. They were afraid that using inflammable might be wrongly interpreted as not flammable, which could result in deadly accidents.

Following the War, however, the majority of American companies went back to using inflammable. But, about twenty years after the War, companies in the United States began, again, using flammable instead of inflammable. Finally, in the late 1970s, flammable overtook the use of inflammable in the United States, and now one seldom sees the use of inflammable on either side of the Atlantic or Pacific."

RE: What's the difference between......

Actually due to the obvious possible confusion, the powers that be, not so long ago, decides to drop the word 'inflammable' from all signage and use only the word 'flammable'.

So that's the difference...one is a banned word.

RE: What is your Motto?

The motto being.....

All is not as it might seem.

RE: What is your Motto?

It is through the perfect and the false seeing of all entities
That the entities that are thus found bear two natures.
The object of perfect seeing is true reality,
And false seeing is seeming reality.

RE: The meaning of mindfulness.

It depends on you definition of religion. In the east Buddhism is looked on as more of a philosophy rather than a religion. But western views are somewhat different. In the west religion is generally defined as...
Having a Deity to worship...Buddhism does not have a Deity as such.
Or
Having a belief in a continuum, some form of life after death, which is a strong belief in Buddhist teachings.
So it can be argued that Buddhism is a religion. It's certainly claimed to be a religion in the UK, if only to qualify for the tax benefits that go with that label.
But a label it is, it changes nothing. Purely from a Buddhist point of view, whether it called a religion or not is quite irrelevant and isn't really an issue.

Going back to the subject of mindulness, it needs to be noted that mindfulness teachings can stand on their own without any Buddhist or Spiritual beliefs. It's taught around the world, especially these days in schools. The method is taught in many cases strictly aside from religious or Buddhist teaching. It can benifit all and it's in some ways unfortunate that the Buddhist, Spiritual connection exists, as it tends to turn some people away from the idea of trying it.
Mindfulness can benifit all who take the time to practice it.

RE: The meaning of mindfulness.

As a footnote, it's just been announced that Buddhist Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh died on 22nd of January.

"One of the great Buddhist teachers of our time, Thich Nhat Hanh died today at Tu Hieu Pagoda in Vietnam, the Buddhist temple where he was ordained at age sixteen. Following his stroke in 2014, he had expressed a desire to return to his homeland, and, in October 2018, moved back to his home temple. There, he spent the last years of his life surrounded by his close disciples and students."

"Nhat Hanh, affectionately referred to as “Thay,” by his students, has often been referred to as “the father of mindfulness.” In his 95 years, he made a global impact as a teacher, author, activist, and the founder of the Engaged Buddhism movement. His simple yet deeply profound teachings led countless people towards a life of mindfulness, joy, and peace."

Us islanders prefer to drive on the left. It's also statistically safer....tongue

"Only 35% of the world's populations live in countries that drive on the left.
Right sided driving is also the primary orientation for all continental landmasses, while the vast majority of islands and countries separated from their continents drive on the left side of the road. Primary examples are England, Japan, Australia, India and New Zealand which have all adopted left-handed traffic orientation."

RE: Post a philosophy song

"Now and again, a piece of art comes along which is totally original. Nothing else has ever sounded like this."

"O Superman. O Judge. O Mom and Dad. Mom and Dad."
Introduces the 3 central chacters in the ballad.
Force (superman) justice (judge) love (mom and Dad.)
Justice is the meat in the sandwich of two very American images. Superman, the good force. Mom and dad as American as apple pie?
"This is the the hand, the hand that takes. Here comes the planes."
Tha narrator asks the question in all our minds. "The hand that takes." Is the hand of death. These are the planes of death, not the holidaying kind.
"Theyre American planes. Made in America.
America means super-power, a symbol of force? Superman.

Released in 1981, Laurie Andersons acclaimed masterpiece is as relevant today as it was back then.....it can be translated in many ways.

RE: The meaning of mindfulness.

I didn't mention, it's the out breath that's counted.

wave

RE: The meaning of mindfulness.

At my local Buddhist centre, Kagyu Ling, in Shamatha, or calm abiding mediation we count (not out loud) to 21. The number is arbitrary, it has no significance, it just serves as a help to focus on the present moment. But the main focus, (object of the meditation) is the breath. Should the mind wander off, we just gently return to the counting back from one and focus back on the breath. There is no aim to reach 21, that would divert the mind from the present moment and suggest a target or somwhere to be other than the present moment. The counting is just a tool to settle the mind and usually, with practice, just focusing on the breath without the need to count is sufficient.
Shamantha (calm abiding meditation) is usually used to settle the mind prior to more complex meditation, such as 'metta,' loving kindness meditation.

This is a link for metta meditation, it can be practised by anyone regardless of their religion or beliefs.

RE: Why would people holiday in the USA ?

I guess that's a reasonable assumption for a person to make if they've never visited the States. Far from the reality from my experience though.
