RE: Kiwis

A lot of birds (and other animals) are migratory seeking food resources. Around my place I enerally have the wood pidgeons donw for the dog food when he was around.

And a blackbird decided it was a good spot as well. Now I have several balckbirds nesting in my area although less wood pidgeons due to lack of dog biscuits. The blackbirds are reletively tame now and come down for a birdbath with me just metres away.

I also have a "peacock" bird hanging around. I call him this because his call is "Peacock, peacock." Actually a Wattle bird but "Peacock" is the call he uses.rolling on the floor laughing And he has a favourite branch to purch on.

With the changing habitat through climate changes (drought, bushfire, clearing) a lot of migratory animals are moving into different and very new-to-them areas for feed.

RE: How do you handle grief?

Hard to tell with scammers. Met a Russian lady many years ago through her daughter playing chess. She and her daughter and husband had been on some sailing boat doing a world tour. He had been one of those people that had built a Viking boat and sailed it through Russia to the Black Sea via a few overland bits.

Wife and daughter could not do the Antartic trip of the latest adventure. Seemed that he wanted adventure more than a family. So they had to move on to AU to wait for them. But many months later, they were stuck in one room doing all the "Maid" work for the "noble family that took them in." Waiting for him to show up.

I had just bought a big house and so offered them half the house if she did the housework. After them being there for many, many months, no word from him. My finances were getting low and needed some income from the big home and eventually pushed them out so I could rent out half the house. She got a position as a housekeeper where she could have her daughter and moved out.

About 2 months, I heard that she had been on Sydney Harbour watching the fireworks on New Years Eve and managed to run into her husband in the crowd (she had not heard from him in over a year, as far as I knew). Last I heard (she called me), she was living in NZ with her husband and she had a very good job.

Some people are scammers. Lots of people are not. Sometimes things just work out.

Global Warming

Has managed to warm up from 11 to 14 with that little bit of sunshine late today.

Saw Sydney had 34 today, usually means 40 in the western suburbs. And those winds were not helping matters with the fires. Although it looks like the RFS work has managed to mitigate some of the problem through their efforts yesterday.

Global Warming

Have just spent a glorious day trying to keep warmish. 6.00pm and it has hit 11 degrees in Melbourne. And the sun is now shining.dancing

Is this the bit were "Daylight Savings" is meant? We have a bit of sunshine at the end of a miserable day.

RE: In Australia

Having travelled a bit through Australia (usually during winter months), I see a lot of people hit the sack very early. Just so they can be on the road again by 7.00am to be at the next stop by 3.00pm for drikies.

Mum and Rex (step-father) would usually not go to bed by 9.00pm. Mainly because they were still asleep in front of the tv.

Definition of a "Good Girl." In bed by 9.00pm and home by 11.00pm.rolling on the floor laughing banana head banger heart wings doh

RE: Fires

I do have a thing about fresh cream and jam scones. And my Mum made the best Date scones.

I know the area of the fires and know a lot of people in the affected areas. I have seen on the ground the devastation. I do not want to watch the news.

RE: Kiwis

I was at Mt Finke SA last year. There are 2 Ooldea Mallee Gums growing in the main carpark on the track leading up to the top. One has Yellow flowers while the other has Red.

They were flowering in July. Middle of Winter. Some gums flower in Spring and some even through Autumn and Spring. Not often in Summer.

My son worked for a private zoo. He can name off the limited species that they had to find to feed koalas. And the way things are going, our koalas may very likely end up like the Pandas with a very limited food supply.

RE: Mary Good-Weather.

You will have to realise that the Au Photo Comp is not about 'professional quality" photos (aka Inters), just what the voters enjoy. Although some of the photos are top notch.

My brother was down last month and I was going through the Photo Comp pics I have from all the AU Comp. He made a few comments regarding lighting, composure, exposure, subject matterdoh Why did I show him.frustrated dunno

My dear Pom_Pom, when you enter the AU Photo Comp with a winning photo, it will be your choice.cheering

So give us a pic in next month's AU Photo Comp. I can see who is likely to win (good thing about being the Scorer) and maybe He/She will give you and others us some pic cahnces that the win the Peoples Choice.thumbs up

RE: For the curious!

I have just been working my way up the Forum Ladder and sort of put it together.

I have known a fair number of people who did service in Vietnam. I was called up but never served. Every one that I have known has some sort of problem with the way they were treated by the Govt and the people of Australia, and other countries.

A fellow I know is called "Two-Bob" by everyone. A lot of reasons for that. At 50 he went virtually comatose when it finally hit him. He wandered into a mate's WWII Jeep workshop one day. It brought him out of his shell when Neil started to look after him and let him run the front counter while Neil worked on the Jeeps.

I saw the posts about dealing with grief. I saw Jim's comments and hope they have not affected him. It does take a lot to open up.

RE: More Random Thoughts ....

We have Mr Lookin on the AU Forum, and there was a Ms Lookin around for a while as well.

One of the things I have found is that this site has connected a lot of single people to be friends. And have met a few and enjoyed their company......exception being Mr Lookin who I have only met the once but he does seem okay.

I still think of Daggs, and miss his humour. Don't miss all the lovey-dovey stuff once he got hooked up. But he copped a lot of crap about being partnered and dropped out. Still think about how he is going these days.

Some people disappear and then return. Some we are sad for because it did not work out for them. Some we are happy to see go because of their attitude and we hope on their return that Mr/Ms Nice has given them some insight about how to deal with people. We are hopeful there.

RE: For the curious!

I think this thread should be called "For the Confused."

10 hours down the track and the etch a sketch looks very familiar.

Now someone is MIA during overseas conflict.

Yep, I am confused.

And now very curious about whatever the thread is about.

RE: Should we..

I used to have a travel element for boiling a cup of water. Fill cup with water, insert element and plug into power point. It was ideal when travelling in Europe where a lot of hotels had no facilties. Probably available from the shops that sell the multi-plugs for travelling OS.

RE: Kiwis

Was once in a place called North Glenferry, Scotland many years ago. Nice pub to stay at but many problems understanding them when they tried to speak English.

But did understand the bit "Ach, mon, thou bee ee Keywae?"

"Sorry, me love, I am an Aussie. Aand me family just wants some breakfast. And NO, we do not want some beer with that"

RE: Fires

One of the big problems is the eucalypts. The oils in the leaves on the trees have an inflammable oil which is why a fire can spread so fast and far when winds are around.

Controlled burns are aimed at taking out a lot of the fuel at ground level, fallen leaves and branches and grasses that are easily ignited. This is the stuff that sustains a fire. A fire that only has the treetops will eventually die out when it comes to some barrier without fuel.

In the Blue Mountains, there are a lot of National Parks which are virutally inaccessible except on foot. The RFS is sending in "walkers" to do some backburning in the Grose Valley. The Grose Valley is long and extremely ugged. And if they cannot contain the fire there, then a lot of the Blue Mountains is succeptable right down to the lower Blue Mountains and Penrith valley.

But the RFS is not going to endanger the lives of these people. If conditions tomorrow, and if the efforts by these "walkers" are not enough, they will pull them out.

As Rob has said, there is a lot of Govt levels involved. We have on one side that the Govt agencies have not done enough and then that peoples lives have been at risk, even resulting with firefighting people dying in these fires.

A few houses burning is not worth the risk of one single volunteer person losing their life.

People are very quick to point the finger. People choose to live in these fire-prone areas. Thye do have to accept the risks of living there.

RE: How do you handle grief?

My son-in-law recently spent the day with his mother and sister to 'remember' his grandfather's passing. His mother insists on it every year. Nan is not invited. My son-in-law comes away in what my daughter describes as a "very foul mood."

My sister's daughter #3 passed away on the day daughter #2 had her birthday. On the anniversary, she and husband of the time took her children (and later daughter #4) to the cemetry to remember her. Daughter #2 hates her birthday.

There are many ways of dealing with grief. I go into a shell and do not want to talk about. I just want to be left alone with my grief.

On saying that, I did once go and see a councillor regularly over several months. Talking it to someone not personally involved did, after time, make it easier for me to open up about my feelings. And I found it did help in many ways.

My only advice is they should go and see a professional. I have given this same advice to many people dealing with grief of different kinds. Some have gotten back to me and thanked me for at least pointing them in a direction. Others I have not heard from again or not willing to discuss it. There is a stygma about "seeking professional advice."

And I am not a good one to listen to my own advice.

What he said.

RE: Hair-care

Oops. Being a bit hairy at my age is a problem. Do hate the "angel wings" growing on my backdunno

I have a blond brother in his 60s who has hair.

If you don't like what you have, tough titties. You have no choice because it happens to many of us.

I enjoy it while I have it.cheering

Not goimg to the shaving bit to hide what I do not have.

RE: Who would you be

Are you looking at the Budgie Smuggler or the Orang Otan?

We all the "Budgie Smuggler" reference and maybe a few do look to see if it is a budgie or a finch (I hate coming out of the cold water).

Oddly enough "Orang" means "white" referring to what they called the Orang Otan as the "White Ape"

even though it had ginger hair.

RE: Kiwis

Bloody Hell. It is 29degs and you want to light a fire.thumbs down

Here is me looking at the orange tree and looking in the frezer for some ice.

RE: This is my MJ page

After MHs death, there was a lot of pressure on INXS to "reform." In 2001, my girlfriend of the time was a good friend with one of the band and told me about the pressure they had to reform and they were getting very pressured into it. I had "known" them from their pub-days around Sydney.

After Freddy Mercury died, I could not believe Queen would ever do anything again. They got in some singer to front the band. Being a Queen fan, I said "Never." But he was very good doing Freddies songs.

MH was a major part of the band.

Trouble is that MH & FM were what people expect from a band. Not some stand-in who is probably as great a singer.

But back to has-beens still doing the rounds. 40 years later and I still enjoy the performances of Russell Morris and Company doing the pub-circuits. Some people never lose their touch unlike bands where fans expect so much from the "passed away" lead singer.

RE: I have fear

The Rolling Stones actually outsold The Beatles. And I think Elvis.

Lynyrd Skynyrd is worth looking up because it was an "era thing." Bit like Pink Floyd.

RE: Sunday 20th October, Melbourne.. be there or be square!!!

Melb Meets have been 6:1. Female to male.

Car show today was 6:1 Male to female..............very high odds for a changedancing They were wives.dunno frustrated

The one I missed today was probably 100:1 male to female.

And my dear lovely Serene, it is very rare that Land Rover owners are called "revheads"rolling on the floor laughing rolling on the floor laughing

RE: Sunday 20th October, Melbourne.. be there or be square!!!

Hope you all had a good time there today. And especially those that Security tries to keep away from us.

And to LiLee at her party.

Me..I went to my car day and it was good catching up with people I haven't seen for a while. But only 5 women and 30 blokes (it is a blokey thing). I think I prefer the odds at the Melb Impromptu meets.

And while I was at the car day, I asked where one of the guys was who lives there. He was at the other car show I was supposed to be at.frustrated Forgot about that one.

RE: Interesting news tip-bits

Equal custody of Sydney Harbour Bridge? But who gets the Windfields???

RE: Sunday 20th October, Melbourne.. be there or be square!!!

Now I have used these excuses for the last 3 months:

"It is raining and can't mow."

"It is too windy and I hate being out in the wind."

"Haven't got fuel for the mower."

"Forgot to take the fuel can when I went to the servo."

"I don't work and not going out just to get fuel for the mower."

I have also used the excuses:

"I will be washing my hair that day, sorry."

"I will have a headache that day, sorry."

Never used the excuse "I did some work and will be a cripple the next day."

This time, it has been a hard decision for me. I have already committed to something else 50kms out of town. I have enjoyed all of the impromto meets I have been to.

If I could get away early enough, I would ............ but know that by the time I get home and then try to find the lovely ladies......and the guys that front up.

RE: Are There Any Dudes In The ..

Got a call from my brother at 6.05am on Thursday. "Hey, Wash, the morning show is telecasting from Rabaul and showing a lot of the army stuff from WWII. Thought I would let you know as Dad was there."

I think old-timers is catching up with him. Dad was PNG, step-father was bombing the crap out of Rabaul and Milne Bay.
