I have seen a couple of bits on tv .... may have been Gardening Australia or Landline on ABC ... about some Asian women (maybe Karan people) who had started doing the vegie garden at Werribee House (Vic). Some sort a local community project done under some Council ethnic female diversity project to get these women out into the community and meet others in similar situation.

Saw an update recently on the project and it has now progressed from just some woment growing some of the vegies from their home country to now some of their unemployed men have now come along to assist with some of the harder work plus the Werribee House State Parks people have now taken on a couple of young people from that culture as horticultural apprentices.

RE: In the U.S of A

Thia is what got Alan Bond into trouble. He had his accountants department do all his his business and private taxes. He would then look at his tax bill and ask the accountants to come up with ways to reduce his tax bills, and they would half of the savings as a bonus. Bond Uni did receive some of its money this way.

Unfortunately for Bond, one accountant was extremely creative and because the signature on the bottom line was "A. Bond" guess who went to jail for tax evasion?

RE: Random Thoughts Version 973

Now that reminds me...great thing about "old timers."

My old boss (he must have been at least 10 years older but...) who I do recall these days..... all of his 5 brothers had heart problems (except him) by the time they hit 42. Anyway, George was always going off about us plebs smoking. His father had worked for WD&HO Wills and as part of his "retirement package" received his monthly plug tobacco allowance.

I will always remember the day George came into work and said "My 92yo father has cancer. I keep saying is no good for you." It was Postate cancer which in the late 70s was very rare. I only learnt 1 way to inhale tobacco.......

But when you consider that my great-grandmother was 94 when she passed away and my grandmother was 96 (both non-smokers), there are a lot of questions to be asked about "other" types of cancer-encouragements.

RE: Memories............

Out of the mouth of babes..... sorry, it was what my daughter said. And this was her with having an aunt of Indian/Chinese mix.

Now I will have to ask you to find and post the song that refers to "coffee coloured people by the score."

Okay, "coloured" may have been spelt "colored" for some poor misguided "we keeno how to spell tings ritely" peepolls who have mutilated/murdered the English language over the last few 100 years.

Bad enough putting up with Yorkies, Scots, Irish & Welsh without some upstarts jumping on the bandwagon.

RE: Memories............

1985........got me thinking about your Title here. The song "Memories" was a song out of the musical "Cats" and a #1 hit. Although oddly enough a lot of play-requests were for the Barbra Striesand song which alluded to 'memories.'

My daughter was just 3 way back then. I do have a very clear memory of my daughter on about that video, not just because Dianna Ross was 'whiter' but my daughter had only commented a short time before about a "Jackson 5" video when we had pointed out MJ to her in it and she said "No. That isn't MJ. That one is black."

RE: Random Thoughts Version 973

In April last year I was in Burren Junction (you will have to look up where it is) for a Clearance Sale. Had quite a few mates going to try and get possibly 1 of the 9 Land Rovers up for sale and a good chance to catch up with those from far flung places. And much dung flung at each other over the weekend as we hadn't seen each other for quite some time.

Anyway, a guy comes along who happens to know one of the guys and sits down for a few drinks. Me, being the only smoker at the time, caught his attention. He dragged out 20c and asked if he could buy a cigarette off me. I told him "Stick your money" ..........

.......and gave him one for nothing. Then I explained that his monetary offer was a bit insulting considering that they cost almost $1 each.

RE: In the U.S of A

With many years of poor dealings with one section of the Tax Office which seemes to be mainly staffed by females, I had sought a word to describe those females who were so busy quoting what someone had previously said to them without realising or understanding what they were saying. "Yes, sir. I have listened to you read to me that section of the Act. Please understand that while the Act does say XXXX it really does not want to mean that and therefore you must pay."

Now after all of those frustrating years I finally find the descriptive word/s I was looking for....just 12 years too late.

RE: Check this????

And I have also had a chuckle to myself about "hanging out the washing."

A few times my daughter has had a whinge because her husband has "no idea on how to hang out the washing."

He has no problems with hanging out with me. Takes me to action movies, buys me icecreams, and tells me "I love this bonding with the father-in-law" (read...old-fart).

Unfortunately, he gets a bit "artistic" when he hangs out the washing. Undies need to have 2 pegs for protection proper drying while knickers only need one at the appropriate location due to the smaller size. Shirts need to be pegged at the arm-pits as these need more attention.

RE: Check this????

I loved my dog to pieces

He came back last night and told me not to believe in religion, but to pay more attention to germs, deseases etc...

He (my dog told me) to ..... This is gonna sound weird

To hang up your socks from the top, coz bacteria likes warm places to germanate and if you hang them up from the toe's end.... That's why peeps get toe jam etc... (thick end and takes longer to dry) quote]

Bloody weird (or should that be "i" before "e" except after "c"). Now that is wierd.

Now back to hanging your socks up. Bit like the problem with horseshoes on which way they should hang.

Story goes that if you hang horseshoes with the open end up, then your luck will not fall out.

But there is an area in Yorkshire (I think) where it is believed that if you hang horseshoes with the open end up, then devils have somewhere to reside and create mischieve.

My mum taught me to hang my socks from the toes to let the goobies fall out.confused

RE: Halloween is fast approaching .....

Halloween or Hallowe'en also known as Allhalloween, All Hallows' Eve,] or All Saints' Eve,] is a yearly celebration observed in a number of countries on 31 October, the eve of the Western Christian feast of All Hallows' Day. It initiates the triduum of Allhallowtide, the time in the liturgical year dedicated to remembering the dead, including saints (hallows), martyrs, and all the faithful departed believers. Within Allhallowtide, the traditional focus of All Hallows' Eve revolves around the theme of using "humor and ridicule to confront the power of death."

According to many scholars, All Hallows' Eve is a Christianized feast initially influenced by Celtic harvest festivals, with possible pagan roots, particularly the Gaelic Samhain. Other scholars maintain that it originated independently of Samhain and has solely Christian roots.

In the Celtic-speaking regions they were "particularly appropriate to a night upon which supernatural beings were said to be abroad and could be imitated or warded off by human wanderers".

The "traditional illumination for guisers or pranksters abroad on the night in some places was provided by turnips or mangel wurzels, hollowed out to act as lanterns and often carved with grotesque faces to represent spirits or goblins". These were common in parts of Ireland and the Scottish Highlands in the 19th century, as well as in Somerset (Punkie Night). In the 20th century they spread to other parts of England and became generally known as jack-o'-lanterns.

Considering Australia's mostly Irish linkages to any country (most convicts were Irish), this has not been a tradition really seen here.

RE: In the U.S of A

Having a son-in-law who has given me many movies, Transformers were included. The name "Maximus Prime " refers to the prime mover (head honcho, boss cockie) Transformer.

The word tractor was taken from Latin, being the agent noun of trahere meaning "to pull." So Tractor can have a number of meanings as a tractor is an engineering vehicle specifically designed to deliver a high tractive effort (or torque) at slow speeds, for the purposes of hauling a trailer or machinery used in agriculture or construction.

So Maximus Tractor could be tranlated to being ..........
Biggest (Maximus) Puller (Tractor). rolling on the floor laughing laugh rolling on the floor laughing

RE: Halloween is fast approaching .....

I do have a lot of misgivings about those who have no ability to look at the "correct" pronunciations.

"Holloween"

"All Hollows"

Which is the correct way of expression?

RE: Pro's & Cons

I do have limits these days on things as I told my doctor recently when I he said I had to limit things.

So "Frisky" is now limited to days that

RE: The principle of relativity ....

About the only Rule or Law of Physics that I still recall from nearly half a century ago is something someone told me when I very young and very niaive about things. After asking my Physics teacher to explain it, I did get around to learning what 'double entende' means.....and loved using it myself.

RE: Pro's & Cons

I grew up in an era when women "did as they were told." Okay, that was the general belief of the time.

It was also the era that followed of "Why is it so?"

Today was also much much time on ABC TV of "All about why Gough was GOD good ." Okay, he did have many progressive ideas. Unfortunately it was "These are great ideas....let's implement them" with no thought on the long-term impacts. Juliar was one on the same page.

At least Kev07 did try to put some thoughts into his actions. Shame his party did not support..................

RE: Ebola virus!

Sorry about the rant but...

...here is another one.

Ebola...E__bol___a. Very soft-sounding, isn't it?

AIDS....Very soft-sounding, isn't it?

Even the deadly gas "Sarin" sounds worse than these.

Ebola Virus??????

Influenza is a virus.

The common cold is a virus.

Why are they giving death-sentence diseases such "nice" names?

RE: Ebola virus!

Odd how a name can raise some different thoughts in same people's minds.

My daughter was the "meat in the sandwich" in a prang yesterday morning. Looks like her car might be written off. Athough her airbags did not go off, her glasses did fall off her head during the crash. Does make me have a 2nd, 3rd & 4th think about a Korean car maker.

I was talking with my daughter shortly before this to see how she pulled up at work today. Okay, co-worker picked her up to take her to work & husband picked her up late from work. She is okay to type.....made her morning coffee and dropped it because her arm was hurting. Day got worse as she could not use her stapeler.

So when I saw the word "Tatterchilla" after hearing that her mother had texted her saying "Heard about your accident. Call me if you want a chat." all I could see was Tarantula[/color].

RE: Ebola virus!

My father never made it to retirement age, he was a tradie.

My step-father managed to be retired for 31 years and he was a tradie.

My father taught me a lot of things about life because I did in my own way want to learn from him.

My step-father taught me that there are many things in life beyond working.

Last night I watched Terminator 3 for the first time.

I grew up learning about the Astradamous Prophosies which "No-one really can interpret beforehand" but everyone seems to be able to comprehend after the event.

There are lots of stuff around regarding Conspiracy Theories (Mel Gibson movies, etc) of Govt/Corp involvement in this sort of stuff. We could even go back to the very old James Bond movies .....

.............Why are they currently showing them?

RE: old Minolta camera VN photos

Yeah, I do remember Dad taking so many photos on 35mm and we would have those glorious "Slide Nights" and we would have the double bedsheet tacked up to the wall so we all could see in great Kodachrome, Technocolor, etc all those great holiday snaps no-one wanted to remember.

Was going to ask our trip to check out something I had located many years ago but never sought confirmation of it.

Unfortunately, my health negated my going along on the trip. I did buy a "Negative/35mm to Digital" scanner system a couple of years ago. Finally got to use it recently. I have done a couple recently when some friends were going to do part of a trip I did (PD - Pre Digital) quite a few years back. The quality is not as good as Rob's efforts so it is still a question whether I have "found" the northenmost marking of the Wade-White Line.

RE: Lumix GX7 Starting with the Peace Rose

When my father was in Thailand in the late 70s, he brought back a few seeds and had spectacular flowers for a short time every year along the driveways. Look similar to what you showed.

A cousin was doing his "Further Studies" for the NSW Police and got curious about the flowers as they looked like something shown in one course.

When he took a flower along, he was asked (very well "asked") where it came from. "Just saw it somewhere, forget where. But thought it looked something like the photo in a lecture recently. Wanted to know if there are sometimes similar things around."sad flower

Many thanks to a very lovely lady (at that time) who got me connected to an Aussie magazine called "Outback." She was later the dreaded Ex #2. I have continued my subsription over the years.

And a very outstanding acknowledged contribution that have come through on the role of the Aussie woman battler in the outback propertuy. Okay, a few have come through thick and thin on "the family property" but there are many that have won through against the odds.

And there have been some of my family members that have not done as well as others. My uncle's funeral highlighted to me that while many saw "The Property" as "belonging to the family" they did see that it did go to the ones who cared for the property and its future values.

RE: Has your

As I do not pay any "phone rental charges" these days as I have hit the Optus Internet system (still not the best but time for a wake-up call to some) I do query the "oh you have a very distinct accent" people about the odds of them of paying me to convert from a free phone system to them paying for me to use their system.

Yeah, they hang up when they finally understand that I do not pay for my landline system.

I think the clincher is when I ask them how much they will pay for using their system as "I currently do not pay for those calls and you are offering me so many savings."

RE: HORSES........

I do remember many years ago on the in-laws property coming across a motor-biker who had managed to "descend the back escarpement." After cutting through a number of stock fences to get there.

"Sorry mate, I just cut that fence as I did not think I could get back up that hill. Everyone does it"

Uuummm. He had cut through the neighbours sheep property into the inlaws cattle property. And more than 1 fence to do this. And it was a big NoNo as the cut fences also meant that now the livestock was wandering onto State/National Parks.

Also had a cousin who had to foot a mega-Govt bill because his deer had wandered into National/State Park areas (that they had donated to the Govt) after vandals/hunters cut their fencing.

RE: Has your

One of the hardest things is where people's thoughts go to when they first see something. And a Queen song does go rampant through my mind on that as well as many other things.

So "Has your" has really only had me thinking about a song which was well before my time but something (an oldie) I do recall my mum singing during the 50/60s.

"Has your chewing gum lost its flavour on the bedpost overnight?"

RE: Has your

After many years of intense loyalty to an Aussie provider, I get fed up with Telstra for my Internet and Home Phone Provider. Styuck with Telstra for my mobile as it is separate and also has more coverage than everyone else and moreso considering my travel locations.

So after a few calls from Telstra (I had well and truly out gone the contract I had with them) "We can offer you 10% discount on your current rates" I went and looked at Optus.

Uummmm double ++ the internet usage plus free for all calls within Australia...and at 60% of the current Telstra cost.

My name is registered as a very loyal customer of a number of different versions of Telstra since 1977. Why would I stick with them?

I now get calls since I changed informing me that "Loyal Telstra customers are sought after and we can now offer you very good deals." Nothing while I was loyal to them.

Loyalty does need to work both ways.

Mens Sheds

There has been "Womens Shed" equivalents out there for many years. Most notably the Country Womens Associations and the View Clubs. And they have been for too long associated with widows and the grey-haired beehive hairdos. Way back in the early 80s, the wife (ex#1) & I visited a friend staying at the CWA rooms in Sydeney. She was around 30 then, and most of the people we saw were not much older.

My mum played hockey when she was very young. She was 82 when when she went to her last reunion "with the girls."

Dad, who passed away in 1984, was in Rotary. So mum was classed as a "Rotary-anne" and did enjoy many times with "fellow Rotary-annes" for many years afterwards.

RE: Jacks been around...!!!

Things are said to come in 3's.

1. I know someone here in Aust with a very similar name.
2. I travel each year to a place called Louth in NSW, Australia.

Ends there as I do not peep in windows.
