Sincere thank you to all who offered kind words, but don't want anyone to feel sorry for me. yes we have since reconciled and he figured out on his own the reasons why what happened happened and in fact is in high school now and lives with me.
i was simply pointing out that sometimes even when we choose not to let words hurt us we are sometimes helpless when faced with them.
perhaps it was too extreme of an example for this format.
Well Jac I mentioned earlier something about the thickness of one's skin and was referring to myself. I consider myself to be pretty tough when it comes to the whole sticks n stones....but words will never hurt me thing and have tried to live up to that. But the day that I drove away from my exwife and children and my oldest son who was 7 at the time not knowing the true situation only that his father was leaving jumped onto the hood of my car pounding his fists against my windshield screaming "I hate you...I will always hate you if you leave...I hate you!!!" Even though i knew those words were coming from a confused, hurt child, they cut so deeply into my heart that it put my into a downward spiral that finally bottomed out in a very dark place. I knew they were only words...but still....
I suspect that for many men around my age or a little older this is far more troubling than the news of the passing of PM Thatcher. I will never forget the first time I understood what the term sweater puppets meant.
I, like most I would assume, like to think that I am immune to the consequences of words. Yet no matter how thick my skin I cannot account for the effects that words have on others often times inciting them to action.
So, "How powerful are words?" you ask. I would submit that they are infinately powerful.
Ideally I would like to see us spend the resources at home. Shore up our own borders to slow illegal immigration and focus on improving legal immigation. Knock down our debt. Maintain a strong and ready military. And always be vigilant and ready to defend the defensless. Maybe just maybe then the world would view us as they did in the days of our grandparents and great grandparents.
I was going to post a simple thumbsup but you said no emoticons.
I agree the US get's or maybe I should say allows itself to get dragged into far to many conflicts that we really should stay out of but to completely withdraw from the world theater would certainly take time. The power vacuum left behind would certainly create turmoil...look no farther than Egypt then imagine that happening on a global scale.
Ok...for those of you not from the States Boban pretty much nailed it with his definition....interesting site the urban dictionary is by the way...anyway I digress...preps is a shortened form of what originally started out as being known as preppies in the 1980s. The definition of what constitutes a prep has been on a bit of a sliding scale over the years. Nowadays pretty much a prep if female is a weak minded individual (although for some strange reason some wear the label proudly) who ONLY wears, says, does, whatever is considered to be "in" at the moment. Ridiculasly trendy to the Nth degree. If a prep is a guy it pretty much means he is a complete douchebag who believes in style over substance. Hope this little American Pop Culture moment was enlightening
idk monte...don't know much about redfords politics or motives...just was spelling out what i know...seems like it was a rather nasty outfit. and btw monte sorry i got sidetracked on your thread earlier...not like me to go down roads of personal disagreement that are off subject
More gun control laws? Hell, we can't even enforce the gun control laws we have on the books now. to say that stricter laws and bans on weapons would keep them out of the hands of criminals is complete rubbish. Banning weapons or requiring a national registry of gun ownership would only serve to make criminals of otherwise law abiding citizens. The black market is so flooded with guns now that it would take generations to even make a dent in the ease of unlawful ownership. We banned alcohol during prohibition and how well did that work? What about our laws against marijuana...how hard is it to get marijuana? I'll tell you how hard...my 12 year old could bring me some home from school any day of the week if he so decided and it would be far more potent than anything we had around when I was in college. Sticter laws and bans are only effective for one thing...helping the naive and the self serving sleep better at night.
i suppose you always have the option of not selecting one of the suggested answers and instead replying with your own answer.
i doubt it's the case too often here but a common tactic of pollsters is to list only possible answers that will steer those who reply to the results that the pollster hopes to achieve. this happens in american politics all the time.
RE: How powerful are Words...?
thank you...me too
