You are right Karn, but I wouldn't say it is all the Irish doing so per the context of this thread. The ranks of the one who gouge the population will thin out. This is not a problem particular to Ireland. I would say it is a condemnation of consumerism. The one taking advantage of the consumers are the greedy one and they turned some legitimate businesses into scamming for profits. You will find profiteers everywhere in the world, not only in Ireland. It is too broad of a statement, IMO. Thanks Karn.
Hi Karn, The same problem existed in the US. When interest rates were low, many people bought or refinanced homes. They moved from a higher Fixed Rate to a lower Variable Rate. When the crisis arrived, most of these people lost their home. They made a financial decision, but I certainly would not call it greed.
I think a definition of greed is in order to try to understand your statement: "Greed is the inordinate desire to possess wealth, goods, or objects of abstract value with the intention to keep it for one's self, far beyond the dictates of basic survival and comfort. It is applied to a markedly high desire for and pursuit of wealth, status, and power." Being in the EU, it would be difficult for Ireland to have the freedom of being greedy as per the description above. I believe that like many other EU nations, they are facing an economical downturn and have difficulties providing basic services.
You should find other causality other than greed as to the, in your word, "destruction" of Ireland. Your statement is too simplistic to hold any truth, IMO.
I forgot, but better tell you: Tourist areas and the center are quite safe. Avoid: Showing a Ipod in city transportation late at night Showing gold jewelery Hang on to your bag Don't fall for the Rom girls showing you signs "do you speak English", or the scam of the gold ring found on the front of you in the street. They target tourists, you will find them near Notre Dame or in the streets by the monuments.
I don't want to scare you, but be aware of your surroundings like any large city.
If you have any problems, you can contact me by email on this site. I doubt you will have to, enjoy your trip.

Gastronomy you will find them in your walking tour and around Les Halles.
Social life, you are on your own, but you will find it around St Germain.
I am talking about "guts", not politic. Unless you want to criticize the character of Churchill. You could, but it remains that he did what he thought was right for his country.
Yes, wars are full of shocking stories, even the ones right now. So, why are you selective about atrocities committed by the Poles and the Soviets? I am not going to get into this, it doesn't matter who started it or who finished it. WWII is over! You could find mountains of documents pertaining to the war, what makes this one so different? Is it because you know the owner of the site? He is in AU, no longer in Danzig. You want to feel pain, take a tour of all the German and Allied cemeteries throughout Europe. I remember the Russian one in East Berlin. I am not attacking your post, I am critical of the subject. Don't mind me, I couldn't miss posting a comment.
"Useless comments" If you surf CS, you will find many comments falling in these categories. It may be useless to you and many, but it entertains some members. This is not the Scientific Journal, so people can utter anything. As in regard to offensive and hateful comments, CS has already Mods.
If members were the ultimate arbitrator, you would find CS completely empty. Well, this is my opinion. Take care James.
It was owned by the Hari Krishna people in the 70's and part 80's. I stayed there when it was transformed in a hotel, nice grounds, but horrible stay. At least I got few pictures. It probably changed now under new owners. You can see more here.
I think Africa is underdeveloped because of corruption, greed mismanagement of fond. A large portion of the money from resources go into military spending, the rulers planing their retirements in case of a putsch and greasing the paws of allies and relatives. The money from NGO's and countries willing to help doesn't buy tractors, but arms. The Chinese have ceased the opportunity to invest in Africa, Western nations realized that it is a bottomless hole. Africans are responsible for underdevelopment, it is their counties and it is their government responsibilities. Internal conflicts are also responsible. They are, of course, poor landlocked countries with only few natural resources. Mali, for example, is a dry country and have Gold and Cotton. By the Sahara desert, it doesn't much to support a poor population with agriculture and the fishing industry.
He may not be a scammer, but not to creative to say the least. East London in SA, "me on the bushside", been to London, didn't hear of it, unless it is Bush Garden, Florida. Never heard of East London there.
