It reminds me of a case in the US were a man picked up a young girl hitchhiking by the side of the road. He later chopped both her arms with a hatchet! Should I feel compassion or for a "human" treatment for that man?
I think justice went from one extreme to another. Some people had a hell of an existence in their lives but never committed such horrendous crimes. Of course, it is a complicated subject, but without laws and retribution, society would fall apart. There is no need to be more human than the inhuman criminals who show great contempt for human life or for law abiding citizens.
Let them earn their keep by working for the common good instead of free loading.
We cage innocent animals, why not cage guilty humans.

I remember reading some blogs in the past where the OP had an erratic behavior. I may have been because of a lack of medication? Later on, that person seemed alright.
