Bakken?

Well probably the most costable and landdestructing oil fields in the world. Too much effort to squeeze out the dirty drops leaving uninhabitable land behind.

Green power would eliminate this in any case.

RE: Prospects for peace in Afganistan

Honestly I do NOT care what you said or not said before! It is SO uninteresting.

Why do you twist every thread you participate in to be about you, and how you feel mistreated from others??

Look at your own responses to other posters and (perhaps) you`ll
get the picture...

It is not possible to join these threads without being dragged into your mudslinging, which is why I do not post often here.
I hear that from other posters too.

Make up your own thread: "About me" and see how many responses you`ll get there..

Don`t bother to answer me on this one - I`m out now - I normally don`t go to a personal level but I`m sad to see many posters giving up contributing because of the low level in the threads.

Good luck - you need it

RE: Prospects for peace in Afganistan

Another one of my old posts:

Why Taleban will remain the winner in Afghanistan.

The people in Afghanistan views life in 2 different ways, which hasn`t been able to cooperate during the last century.

One is secular and wants progress and consists of the elite and well educated part of the population.

The other view is rooted in the countryside in a clan/tribal society. A traditionbased lifestyle which is hesitating towards changes.

In 1979 the communist dominated army takes the power and invites USSR to invade the country.

Result: A destroyed country, one and a half million deads and 5 million refugees!

This supposed "progress" leaves the "average" afghan thinking that progress means violence - attacks - suppression and destruction of previous values.

After the Soviet invasion the afghans only meets the so called modern world in the context of war. All offers for schools, hospitals or roadbuilding is only provided from armed military persons.

A total compromittation of the upper middle class.

This gives the mullahs a far greater credibility than schoolteachers which still are more or less communist influenced... At least the mullahs haven`t caused that much chaos and loss of lives.

And "The red Army" didn`t have a clue about, what they were supposed to do with the country, once they had occupied it.

The US supports the Mujahedins against the US financially during the occupation.

But stops when they decide to invade Afghanistan. Now the Mujahedins becomes the Talebans.

Nor the US Army has a clue today for what their purpose are - 10 years later after invading the country. Except for the perfect location just up to the eastern Iranian frontier!!

They just think that once progress has knocked the door, the rest will follow without question.

Another blind actor has entered the scene with a civil war inbetween.

Warlords fighting, not in defence or because of idealism - only to demonstrate their selfjustifying right to shoot and kill and rob an already beaten country.

For those who survived the USSR invasion and now are facing the US invasion - Taliban wasn`t the worst in their perspectives..

The Afghans perception of "Democracy" and progress is something dangerous dropping down from the sky!

RE: Prospects for peace in Afganistan

Sure you`ve read about the poor afghan girls, not able to attend school. Probably also about the womens rightsd in Afghanistan..

Which are now he reason why "we" are still "fighting" there.

Of course we spend a huge amount of money and lost lives to make sure these girls go to school and learn about democracy!

This is not an attack on you Paldi - but merely to focus on the shifting reasons for intervening Afghanistan...

So, who are the fools??

Surely not Halliburton - Maersk and other greedy companies!!

RE: Prospects for peace in Afganistan

Yes, which leads to the question: "Who is the insane part?? professor

RE: Prospects for peace in Afganistan

Not reallyt Conrad - Pashto speaking people are found mostly in southeastern Afghanistan or northwestern Pakistan...

Afghan, Pashto-speaking ( 35%) people of southeastern Afghanistan and northwestern Pakistan

Dari is another language spoken by about (50%)

RE: Prospects for peace in Afganistan

Hi Paldi..

Just putting up one my old posts from one of Patmacs "unbiased" threads...

A lot of todays talebans in the province are mostly poor peasants (Pashtuns) earning a day wage to stay alive. They are not trained to fight but their advantage is the almost nonexistent infrastructure in mostly mountain areas.

And those who considers themselves talebans are also more rooted as Pashtuns. They applause the state the country is in, almost no electricity, when it is there it is very unstable and leaves no ground for building up business. The same situation goes for gas.

The Pashtuns are the major tribal and Islamic character of Afghanistan which it would take many many generations to change psychologically and socially. And yes the are very xenophobic, but more because of tradition than sharia. Which also influences their view on women.

Though in fact it is the women who should be honoured for holding the country together, they carry the heaviest burdens.
They had the best conditions during the Soviet invasion, but they were not ready for that. It was a totally upside down world from one day to another, according to their tribal lifestyle. Only the elite saw the benefits.

And yes the madrassahs came really to live with fundamentalistic perspectives, but as I explained in my previous post, it happened because all schools, hospitals etc. were controlled from an invading army. Even the teachers were armed and teaching ideas which could have come from the moon in their point of view.

And more important is, that the Pashtuns are not only located in Afghanistan. 13 millions live in Afghanistan but 28! millions live in Pakistan. And they have strong bonds. And see the talebans as their tool to restore and maintain their ethnic heritage.

With US drones and assassinations, Pakistan is in a terrible trouble. They cannot afford to ignore 28 mil Pashtuns who are deeply influenced by what is happening to their own people on the other side of the border in Afghanistan. Remember Pakistan has another neighbour knocking on the door: India.
The presence of the US Army started with the hunt for Bin Laden after 9/11. Most Afghans have never even heard of it, nor have they access to newsmedias.
Bin Laden was never caught and yet they/we remain. Perhaps as you say to prevent fundamentalism to spread to Pakistan or because it is embarrassing just to withdraw from a mission incomplete?

Funny that they/we haven`t learnt from Vietnam or even the words from the Soviet: Mission Impossible.
The unwanted invasion of a country only creates hate, which will fuel the fundamentalist.

When someone makes a move
Of which we don't approve,
Who is it that always intervenes?
U.N. and O.A.S.,
They have their place, I guess,
But first send the Marines!

We'll send them all we've got,
John Wayne and Randolph Scott,
Remember those exciting fighting scenes?
To the shores of Tripoli,
But not to Mississippoli,

What do we do? We send the Marines!
For might makes right,
And till they've seen the light,
They've got to be protected,
All their rights respected,
'Till somebody we like can be elected.

Members of the corps
All hate the thought of war,
They'd rather kill them off by peaceful means.
Stop calling it aggression,
O we hate that expression.
We only want the world to know
That we support the status quo.
They love us everywhere we go,
So when in doubt,
Send the Marines!

RE: Fox News Banned From Canada

By Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

As America's middle class battles for its survival on the Wisconsin barricades - against various Koch Oil surrogates and the corporate toadies at Fox News - fans of enlightenment, democracy and justice can take comfort from a significant victory north of the Wisconsin border. Fox News will not be moving into Canada after all! The reason: Canadian regulators announced last week they would reject efforts by Canada's right-wing Prime Minister, Stephen Harper, to repeal a law that forbids lying on broadcast news.

Canada's Radio Act requires that "a licenser may not broadcast ... any false or misleading news." The provision has kept Fox News and right-wing talk radio out of Canada and helped make Canada a model for liberal democracy and freedom. As a result of that law, Canadians enjoy high quality news coverage, including the kind of foreign affairs and investigative journalism that flourished in this country before Ronald Reagan abolished the "Fairness Doctrine" in 1987.

Political dialogue in Canada is marked by civility, modesty, honesty, collegiality, and idealism that have pretty much disappeared on the US airwaves. When Stephen Harper moved to abolish the anti-lying provision of the Radio Act, Canadians rose up to oppose him fearing that their tradition of honest non-partisan news would be replaced by the toxic, overtly partisan, biased and dishonest news coverage familiar to American citizens who listen to Fox News and talk radio. Harper's proposal was timed to facilitate the launch of a new right-wing network, "Sun TV News" which Canadians call "Fox News North."

Harper, often referred to as "George W. Bush's Mini Me," is known for having mounted a Bush-like war on government scientists, data collectors, transparency, and enlightenment in general. He is a wizard of all the familiar tools of demagoguery; false patriotism, bigotry, fear, selfishness and belligerent religiosity.

Harper's attempts to make lying legal on Canadian television are a stark admission that right-wing political ideology can only dominate national debate through dishonest propaganda. Since corporate profit-taking is not an attractive vessel for populism, a political party or broadcast network that makes itself the tool of corporate and financial elites must lie to make its agenda popular with the public.

In the Unites States, Fox News and talk radio, the sock puppets of billionaires and corporate robber barons, have become the masters of propaganda and distortion on the public airwaves. Fox News' notoriously biased and dishonest coverage of the Wisconsin's protests is a prime example of the brand of news coverage Canada has smartly avoided.

RE: IQ vs.IQ,-1870 or 2011,-STILL THE SAME?

Observing the various realms of science, medicine, experts and world events, I’ve come to the conclusion that our modern definition of “intelligence” (IQ) is seriously lacking. The label of “high IQ” is typically assigned to those who are experts in narrowly-defined fields such as disease pathology, pharmacology, particle physics, mathematics or other so-called “hard science” areas. And yet, it’s not uncommon to see a high-level mathematics professor with an IQ of 175 chowing down on a processed hamburger laced with toxic chemical additives, while wearing clothes washed in carcinogenic mainstream laundry detergent.

Memorization is NOT intelligence.

See, the very concept of “intelligence” in our society is way off the mark. It isn’t intelligent to be able to memorize and regurgitate a huge number of facts and figures, yet this is precisely the measure of academic aptitude assessed in modern educational systems — especially in law school and medical school. To function as a crude human database of facts and figures is not very useful in an age where handheld computers and mobile computing devices can do the same thing.

Real intelligence is to assimilate information into a larger picture.

But what computers and search engines can’t accomplish — something that is uniquely reserved for intelligent species — is the ability to assimilate information into a larger picture. It is, in other words, the ability to “connect the dots” and see patterns and trends in what might seem like chaos to others.

Advance human intelligence with a “quantum leap” in consciousness.

To see and recognize the patterns in the reality we apparently inhabit is, in my view, the most important next step necessary for the advancement of human intelligence. Importantly, this advancement cannot come from the sciences alone. It must involve a so-called “quantum leap” in consciousness.

RE: Libya - Latest Updates

Back the Libyans
The Arab League should authorize military intervention to stop the killing

THE people of Libya are under attack and need protection. Now. Not in a few weeks’ time. By then countless thousands could be dead.

Normally the world looks to the UN to provide the means in such circumstances. But the UN has shown itself divided and ineffectual over Libya. It is not capable of helping — even though it has a unique relationship with the country. Libya is the UN’s baby. It was the first and only state created by it. But even if the UN does decide on sanctions and a no-fly zone, they will not stop the killing. A no-fly zone did not protect the inhabitants of northern and southern Iraq from Saddam Hussein’s henchmen. It is not going to protect the people of eastern Libya from Qaddafi’s. The people of Libya need action now. They need armed protection. That means military intervention.

That has to come, can only come, from other Arab states. The Arab League needs to meet and authorize immediate action. It is the only body that can do it. It has legitimacy and a right to take the decision — in the eyes of the Libyans who are crying out for help, in those of the Arabs and of the world. It cannot be left to the UN to make that decision. Not that it will. There are voices on the UN Security Council that would sabotage any such move. But even if it did decide, who would the UN send? The British or French or NATO forces? That would play straight into Qaddafi’s hands. He would use that to rally the Libyans behind him, claiming the country was being invaded by the West.

The fact that Arab League has never taken such a decision before does not matter. It has never suspended a country for attacking its own people before, either. But it has just done it. Libya has been suspended for that very reason. The Arab League can likewise decide on intervention and ask member states to act on its behalf. It has a moral duty to do so.

Geographically, the best placed armed forces to take action are those of Libya’s neighbors, Tunisia and Egypt. Politically, they are the best choice as well. Given what has happened in their own countries and their role in those changes, they have credibility with the Libyans, and the rest of the world. Being seen to rescue the Libyans from Qaddafi’s mercenaries would also make them heroes at home and throughout the Arab world.

Whichever Arab state sends its forces, there has to be more than one country involved. Intervention by one state alone could be seen as invasion. Two or more together would be seen as liberators.

On the streets of Egypt and Tunisia, the people have taken control of their own affairs. Libyans want to do the same. They are being butchered for their efforts. The responsibility to help them now lies with their fellow Arabs. That responsibility must not be avoided or betrayed. A new Arab world is being born, one where freedom and responsibility go hand in hand and where Arabs are seen to deal with and resolve Arab problems. It must not falter so soon.

Arabs must come to the help of their Libyan brothers and sisters.

Interesting thought - as I don`t think any good would come out from an US operation. That sure would backlash the whole process and create new tragedies like Iraq and Afghanistan...
