YES, there are some rules about genders in French but...also a few exceptions.
You should instead compare the German language. One has to learn the article with every noun. Eg..you eat with a fork (die Gabel) a knife (das Messer) and a spoon (der Löffel)... 3 different genders!
I have many strange stories to tell but...too long to write.
A short one here: I seem to influence electrical appliances, for some reason... I was in someone's house once (a date!) when the TV suddenly turned itself on as I was looking at it. Then it switched off ...and then on again...for a few minutes. The guy found it creepy!
Then I went outside, and nothing happened!
We never met again after that!!! Although we had a wonderful connection!
