I brought 4x4 wheel drive dual cab ute, and also a off-road-camper-trailer in 2005, besides the ute turning out to be a lemon, the camper folds out into a tent which is not at all comfortable on hot sunny days. You might consider the benefit of a trailer with a hard-top, yet with lid down no higher than the roof of your ute, dual-cab gives you space to keep things you value safe. However an on-road-off-road motor bike would fit better on the back of a single cab ute. my pick would be a Yamaha 200 Ag bike as it has very low range gear for steep bush tracks etc. photos of my set up can be found by visiting my web
Good fridge will set you back a better part of a grand, and 120 watt of solar panels to recharge a battery to run it about the same. Good Sine Wave inverter i found useful and now with Telstra prepaid mobile Wi-Fi NextG internet access and your laptop you'd not be wanting much else Camping grounds are usually very very expensive to stay in, if you stay away from populated areas you can pretty much park up anywhere
