I would not stop immigration at all. People who can bring much needed skills required by companies would have no problem getting a green card. As long as you have a compnay sponser who will employ you then it would be pretty easy to get a green card.
But companies would have to prove that there is not an Irish supply for the position just like they must do now with Non Eu citizans. Of couse we will need immigration in the future. It is non skilled immigrants that would have difficulty getting into the counry or people with skills that we have in abundance in Ireland.
But the reason the smoking ban came in is because the government were advised by their legal team that they could be looking at law suits from Bar workers in the future who did not smoke but had got illnesses connected with smoking. Plus the government dont supply the cigs but they would have to supply the drugs as you could not have herion on sale in the local shop.
I lived in thge US also. Their borders are bigger than ours, we are an Island, harder for people to come into Ireland as you can only arrive through ports or airports. No land borders except with the UK so the Green Card system would be far more affective.
You said you or your company would probably not pat tax if we were not in the EU? Why? We would have tax laws that taxed everyone working here. Unlike now.
I think we are far too much of a nanny state. I would have clubs and pubs open 24/7. It is silly the government tells us when we can and cant go out for a drink. I agree in principal at legalising drugs but a lot of work would have to be dome beforehand to educate kids that just because they are legal does not mean they are good. Also what if people OD on state provided drugs? Who is at fault. Could the family sue? There are lots of pitfalls.
If Ireland left the EU then we would have our own tax laws so we could make every company and person working in Ireland pay tax to the state. I would have us leave the EU if i had my way but i was stating at the moment non EU citizans have lots of appeals available to them which can take years and cost us billions in legal fees.
I would send them home after one hearing and if they wanted to appeal they could do so from their country. If they won the appeal the Irish State would pay the legal bills but if they lost they would be billed. At the moment we are paying to keep thousand in the country that have no right to be here. We are housing, feeding, clothing and keeping them. Also we pay all the legal bills on appeals that have no hope of success. It is ridicioulas.
If we left the EU i would have a green card system similar to the US, Canada and Oz.
I agree but i think the arguement that there will be a huge black market for a product if you tax it is no reason not to tax it. If that was a legitimate arguement then we would legalise a lot of things. My reason for taxing tobacco is people choose to smoke. We have hit welfare / child benefit / careers allowance and the medical card in the budget. We screwed the most vunerable in society and i think this was so wrong. If we increase tax on smokes then people always have the choice to give them up. I know it is easier said than done but thousands quit smoking every year so it is very possible.
I totally agree we need immigration. But we need to make changed to our immigration system. It is too complicated. It takesd up to 10 years to decide of people from non EU countries can stay. Thats far to long considering only 10% of them get to stay.
Wow fair play to him. There is some American dude like that too. He is a billionaire and he has left all his money to charity when he dies. Bill gates and him set up some foundation. They both are giving their kids a couple of million dollars but the other billions they have is all going to different charaties.
They have built a modern city of the future in Dubai. It is a city of 20,000 that work in the companies based there. There are no cars or buses. Everyone gets around in a network of posd that run along a track and are controlled by computer. They come along every 5 mins and stop at designated areas. It looks such a great place.
Well with global warming i think it is the only way forward at the minute. Solar Power and Wind Farms can only create so much power. Until we come up with something better I think it could be the way forward.
