Your guess wasr correct, just Googled it & it was the USS Stark. One thing I just found fascinating with the Iran - Iraq War was that it was almost like a time warp, they fought a trench war with barbed wire, bayonet charges & yes even mustard gas.
Fascinating points as usual Albert . On the Iran - Iraq war I did feel that during Reagans term they did supply Iraq with equipment ( field ambulances, etc) and some intelligence due to their hatred of Iran, but from memory that all changed after a Iraq fighter jet attacked an American warship with exocet missiles.
