A fairly decent who dunnit type spy/murder movie

First, let me say the critics all seem to hate it. There complaints seem to fall in three categories. Long standing dislike of the actors. They don't like the locale. They want to see more sex scenes.

They are idiots. I have done investigations of this type and I enjoyed the heck out of it. No I don't think I have personally ever scene a case that exciting, but I never tried to cope with that kind of situation either.

The name of the movie is Shanghai. It is set just before WW2 in the city of Shanghai. An American Naval Intelligence Agent is dispatched to Shanghai to assist or replace his best friend who is also a Naval Intelligence Agent. The man is working on something and is not properly briefing his command. Upon his arrival in Shanghai the second agent learns the first agent has been murdered by unknown persons for an unknown reason. Gunned down in the street like a dog and his throat slit too. Why and by who is now the question.

Things I liked about the movie. The historical setting in what was arguably one of the most fascinating of cities of the time.

<Shanghai also had a reputation back then of being one of the most crime ridden and violent cities on Earth, with competing triads battling for control and the old pre-WW2 Shanghai Municipal Police Dept. was legendary amongst law enforcement for some of their cases and exploits.>

The use of subtitles, although it occurs is minimized and it looks like the Directors were careful so that scenes where white subtitle letters would be needed were filmed with enough contrast so it is all easily readable.

The various (many) uniforms worn by the different government entities there appear to be correct for the period, so too are their weapons. Nothing annoys me as a movie goer as much as seeing some guy in a Civil War era movie firing a Colt Peacemaker or seeing a WWI soldier spraying away with his Tommy gun. There is none of that nonsense here. The weapons shown are what they had back then. Armor is an old hobby of mine, so I wondering where on Earth did they find a working Type 97 tank for the movie? Maybe it is made up, but durn that is a recognizable profile and I don't even need to see the flag. Although I guess the younger folks in the audience might, so the director gave it one. LoL

It looks like someone spent some effort to re-create replicas of some later destroyed historic buildings. The movie is filmed in Shanghai.

The movie filming actually began in 2008, but there was a dispute with China over who would play what part so it went on hold for few years, then later investor squabbles delayed it's release.

Here is a preview.

falling down........

..........Falling Down.....

Have you ever thought why people fall down? Absolutely, there are many reasons, but the most important one is breaking down the mental of people. In such instances, these people have a tendency to do violence and not to obey the rules. Sometimes, as a consequence of their environment or living area, they face discrimination and they accepted like criminal and guilty person. We can come .......
cross with these people in our lives or we can see them in movies. The movie called “Falling Down” deals with this problem as a subject, and there is a man -D-fens- who experiences mental breakdown in the film. In my opinion, there are many reasons why the man -D-fens- has a mental breakdown...
(unemployed defence engineer William Foster (played by Michael Douglas)

First of all, the world around him is unfair, and he can’t accept inequity; therefore, he show his violent face which is the effect of mental breakdown. There are several incident about inequity in the movie. For example, in the market, the Korean man does not have any intention to give change to him. Because of this, he show his anger:he hits the Korean shop owner, breaks up his shop with the base ball bat, and at the end of the scene, he pays the cost of coke supposing that he does not damage to anything in the shop. From these behaviour, we can understand that he is imbalanced and impatient. Also, he doesn’t like the citizens of other countries. Second example is that, in the golf area, the old golfer said that “Miserable and poor man can not go into the golf field.” Actually, he said this sentence to D-fens. Therefore, he shows his anger again:he draws his gun and threatens the old golfer. As we can see from two examples, mental breakdown of D-fens is the result of his circumference. He behaves so rude and violent that it shows “the Falling Down of one person”. In brief, in this paragraph, we see that the first reason why D-fens’s mental brake down is the inequity and injustice in his environment.

In addition, according to him, the system which takes place in government, restaurants, construction industry is not appropriate one. In his walk to the family house, he comes across with many people who represent the improper system. For example, in a fast food restaurant, the restaurant’s owner do not have wish to give breakfast although three minutes passed the breakfast time. D-fens insists on giving him a breakfast, but the manager don’t care. Then he shows his violent face again, and he shoots the ceiling of the restaurant. This example shows that a person, whose mental was broken down, always objects something around him/her since he/she can’t control his feelings and reaction. Interestingly, in this scene, we can understand that he only want to harm his target, not to other innocent people. For instance, he do not want to hurt the consumers in the restaurant because his target is the system of the fast food restaurant. The second example is the wealth of a plastic surgeon. D-fens wonders how the plastic surgeon can make a fortune like that. He says that he had worked for many years, but he has nothing now. Maybe, this injustice made his mental brake down. In brief, in this paragraph, we see that the second reason why D-fens’s mental brake down is the unfair system around him.

Finally, his unsuccessful business career and marriage may be the reason why he is experiencing mental breakdown. First, his marriage was ruined because of his imbalanced behaviour. We couldn’t know why he seperated precisely, but it may be frustration and be driven to violence by the inherent irritations of everyday life..........CONTINUED in comment section...

Bajrangi Bhaijaan

Oh my gosh! I’m so speechless and amazed after watching Bajrangi Bhaijaan. I cried, laughed, cried, and laughed some more. Amazing story. Amazing acting by Salman Khan, Harshaali, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Nawaz and the rest of the cast and crew. I loved the message of this movie. Loved Kareena as Rasika when she told Bajrangi that the caste system was stupid and that you should not hate a six year old girl just because she was a Pakistani Muslim. Loved the songs. Was crying so much Bajrangi decided to give Shahida to the agent who was going to take her across the border to Pakistan. Thank God that Pawan was there to rescue her when the agent sold her to the brothel madam. Loved it when Pawan decided to take Munni across the border to Pakistan himself. So funny about Boo Ali and how Pawan didn’t want to escape from the border patrol because he was Bajrangi Bali’s devotee and so he could not do anything on the sly.

Loved how he didn’t want to go into Pakistan until he got permission. So funny how he met Chand Nawaz and how Munni stole the handcuffs from the police officer. But hands down my two favorite hilarious parts were when Pawan and Chand Nawaz had to escape dressed as women wearing burkas. Kind of reminded me of Mahabharat and our Shaheer dressed as Brihannela. The second funniest part was when someone asks have you heard of Mahabharat and the other person is like what is that, is that a new movie. Lol.

Loved the hug between Shahida and her mother when they finally reunited. Loved the love that the two countries of India and Pakistan had for Bajrangi Bhaijaan. Had tears running down my face at the end of the movie when everyone is shouting Bajrangi Bhaijaan and Pawan is going across the gates to go back to India and then Shahida runs to him but she can’t get his attention because she could not speak since birth but then finally she yells “Jai Sri Ram, Mama!”

Loved how they tricked the head police officer by Shahida/Munni leaving the banana in the exhaust pipe of the car so that the car would stop and Chand Nawaz would use his amazing mechanic skills to fix the car. Loved it when Nawaz said that his wife was also mute and then he said mother and daughter are sametosame. Laughing out loud, Salman Khan made an interesting women. Totally thought about our gandivdhari (Arjuna from Mahabharat) than.

We should not discriminate against others because of their caste, creed, or sex. Absolutely loved it when the police started lifting the veils of the women to see if they were really women. Loved it when the women slapped the police officers. Loved hearing the Hanuman Chalisa at various parts of the movie. So glad to see my favorite actor be the best that he can be. We want peace and love not war and hate. We should get together and work together to make this world a better place. We need more people to act like Bajrangi Bhaijaan. Loved the Rasika and Pawan Jodi (relationship). The chicken song was absolutely hilarious to see. Loved the song at the Dargha in Kashmir. There should be more movies like this made in this world!

Baahubali: The Beginning

Still speechless after watching the Telugu version of Baahubali. It was so amazing. I had a great time. Proud to be a Telugu. Finally people can see the amazing ness that is Telugu movies. There was a lot of violence but the story was unique, epic, and the songs were amazing.

Loved the part when Prabhas (Baahubali) picked up the Shiva Lingam and carried it all the way to the Ganga River. Couldn’t stop laughing when Shivudu was painting Avanthika’s hand when she was asleep by the river and then she plans her ambush only to be surprised when she couldn’t find Shivudu because he tricked her when she was up on the tree. So hilarious when Shivudu has the snake distract her so he could paint her shoulder. Loved the Shivudu and Avanthika relationship.

Another funny part was when Baahubali and Bhallaladeva go to various kingdoms trying to find the spies. I loved the part when they go to that place and one of them asks for the alcohol but everytime he gets a drink he throws it away and says he needs a bigger one and then he asks for drinks for all the other guys while his brother hunts down the traitorous spy.

I could tell that the director Rajamouli Garu was heavily influenced by Mahabharat for many reasons. The whole theme of good over evil, Politics or Rajneeti, a baby being floated down the river, fights over who has the right to be the next ruler of the kingdom, a prince knowing when to protect its people and when to kill enemies, the older brother being deemed unfit to rule because of infirmity and then wanting his son to be the king even though his son was against dharma, the true ruler dying early and making a regency for the kingdom until the heirs grew up, one person fighting for the kingdom even though he knows that the king is against Kshatriya dharma, one person fighting the caste system, a baby having two mothers: the mother that gave birth to him and the one who raised him, a women being chained for years, and last but not least the fact that someone wants to ruin the enemies for the attacks on the honor of a stri. In the case of Mahabharat, the stri was the wife of the Pandavas Draupadi but in Baahubali she was the mother/adopted mother of Baahubali and Bhalleladeva. Hats off to the cast and crew of such an amazing movie. Jai Mahismathi!

Arranged Show on FYI

Was astonished that I found this wonderful show on On Demand last month. It was so interesting watching all ten episodes of this unique show. Season one of Arranged introduced us to three couples from various religions who follow the tradition of arranged marriages.

Couple one was Christian and Maria who were 18 and 17 year old Romany/Gypsy teenagers. They were a unique couple that in the beginning argued many times and it seemed like Christian spent more time playing video games than spending time with his wife. They were the only couple who lived with the extended family because they lived with Christian’s family. Surprisingly Christian and Maria were the couple who won the newly arranged game that was played in the reunion episode when all three couples got together for dinner.

The second couple was Josh and Meghan who were 28 and 24 year old Caucasian Southern Baptists. Josh’s mother was very interesting because she was always criticizing Meghan. One example of this was saying on the wedding day that Meghan loved to eat. Because Josh was a momma’s boy he never stood up for his wife and that was one thing that I wish he could have done better.

Couple number 3 was Veeral and Ragini who were 34 and 33 Indian Hindus. Ragini was confident but Veeral usually didn’t listen to her like for example after the Sangeet he stays up the whole night partying and dancing. He ends up waking up late and he has to write his vows on his cell phone whereas Ragini had written her vows earlier and had at least slept some the night before her wedding. Veeral freestyles his vows but they prove to be written amazingly well and he pulls it off. Ragini’s vows were very emotional especially her last line when she said that she would love to have him as her husband in every future lifetime of hers.
