Humans and Microchips

I’m not talking about small boxes of French fries shoved into your wrist, but microchips that can and are being inserted into human hands and in cases brains.

There are some benefits:
• Security, open locks etc.
• Medical data ( Emergency Services can scan you)
• Banking and security pins (Easy payments, cashless and cardless)
• Tracking and locating missing people, especially keeping an eye on kids.

What about the cons:
• RFID chips being hacked, biohacking, big brother always watching your every move.
• Brain implants, maybe beneficial but could they contain a “kill switch” and we can be remotely euthanized.

There some companies insisting on mandatory microchipping so employees can be tracked; refusal may impact on future promotions.

Would you be willing to be microchipped if you received more pay and benefits?

New Technology And You

Are you skeptical/sceptical about some new inventions or technology yet to come? Don’t be but if you insist, don’t talk about it too much. Some very bright and knowledgeable people made colossal fools of themselves in the past. Don’t let the same happen to you.laugh

Weird pop-up message on computer

I was recently on Skype....the first time in many years. I had to download the program and make a new account. Anyway, after a few days of using it, it froze up on me. I had to restart my computer and when it was restarted, a pop-up box came up saying that another computer with the same ISP was connected.

I wrote down the exact message....but I cannot find it right now. I decided to uninstall Skype and the box has not popped up since. Is this anything to be concerned about? I am technology stupid. :(

I’m often asked how the energy revolution affects Virgin’s strategic thinking and how we do business on a daily basis. As an investor and entrepreneur, I’ve never seen a more compelling business case than the one presented by the development of more energy-efficient systems. The falling costs of renewables and batteries make cost-effective, clean electricity unstoppable and essential to the transition to a low carbon, energy-abundant world.



I think it’s important for all businesses to treat climate action as a long-term investment rather than a short-term expenditure. Taking action now, from investing in renewables to more energy-efficient production, will not only make your business more resilient, it will also make you more competitive. A dollar spent now on clean energy, is a thousand dollars saved in the future.



In the Caribbean, where I live, building decentralised grids powered by solar and wind will help slash generation costs and make island communities far more resilient to natural disasters, like Hurricanes Irma and Maria last year. It’s a positive shift. It gives people more choice and control, and makes the local environment cleaner, along with the planet as a whole.



One of the most exciting developments I’ve noticed is consumers are becoming increasingly aware of energy issues, and demanding answers and positive action from businesses. What sources of energy do you use? What is your energy footprint? What are you doing to be more sustainable?

Virgin is doing some really exciting things in this space. As a Group, our activity covers a lot of sectors, including some where we are still big carbon emitters today: aviation, space travel and more recently, cruises. But we’ve set some pretty ambitious goals, and the most important one is to reach net zero emissions by 2050, ideally a lot earlier. We want to push our companies to become leading examples of business action on climate – even our top emitters.




Take aviation. I think this is one of the sectors with the greatest potential for innovation. Virgin Atlantic, for instance have made great progress in reducing the carbon footprint of every flight. Last year, Virgin Atlantic announced a 22 per cent reduction in aircraft carbon emissions over the last nine years. The majority of these emissions reductions have come thanks to our multi-billion fleet investment in more efficient aircraft (Boeing 787, A 350), as well as from operational improvements including optimized aircraft maintenance, cleaning and new flying techniques. VAA are also on the cutting edge of renewable fuel development, thanks to their brilliant partnership with LanzaTech, who turn industrial waste gases into commercial jet fuel. The project is now incredibly close to becoming a reality – with the potential to deliver big carbon savings.



We’ve also incubated a number of projects with Virgin Unite, our entrepreneurial foundation. We set up the Carbon War Room in 2009 to work with the most polluting industries to reduce their carbon footprint. They merged with Amory Lovins’ Rocky Mountain Institute in 2014. Today, ‘Global Energy Transitions’ is one of RMI’s core focuses. A working man's knife

In the United States for 5 decades the standard knife of the working man was of two basic types. One either carries a multi tool which is similar to a Boy Scout knife in concept but also includes a reasonably sturdy folding plier such as the Leatherman, OR, one carries a folding knife of the Buck 110 type (or a clone of).

The Buck 110 has earned a place as a classic. They retail for about $35 on Amazon.com The 3 3/4" stainless steel blade is that of a small sheath knife and it can be honed to razor sharpness. When opened the blade locks into the open position so that it will not slam shut on the owners fingers when doing heavy cutting or slicing tasks. The handle to which the blade folds is made of Rosewood with brass bolsters. The clip point blade allows fine detail cutting while the 0.12" blade thickness allows some force to be safely applied when levering. There have been literally millions of them sold. Although initially intended for outdoorsmen who wished to have a reasonable hunting and camp knife without wearing a sheath knife, the design gained immediate acceptance amongst the construction tradesmen as well as other industries in which a good knife is often an important accessory to the workman's kit or tool belt. You will find these knives in a belt pouch or a pocket of construction workers, mechanics, farmers and outdoors workers across the nation. In addition to the Buck brand name stamping on the ricasso of the blade there is also a date code which allows collectors to identify the year of manufacture. Some folks care about that, even though a Buck 110 made in 1963 is otherwise identical to one made in 2018. The complaints about the 110 design are only a few, but they do exist.

A) Learning to open the knife one handed requires a fair amount of practice and a blade pivot mechanism that has been opened and closed enough times so that it is no longer stiff. Once the technique is mastered though any Buck 110 requires only a soft flick of the wrist to open and lock the blade into position.
B) The knife is not light. It ways 7.2 ounces, almost half a pound. The handle is 0.6" thick.
C) The locking mechanism can wear and fail with time. It usually takes about 5 years of daily use 3 or 4 times a day, but eventually the edges of the locking notch can become rounded enough to fail under pressure along the spine of the blade. If your Buck 110 is razor sharp this can result in sudden pain and blood (and or finger) loss.
D) The knife's edge can be used for shaving insulation off wires, and if a copper wire is thin the knife can cut through it. However, the knife was designed for slicing softer materials and cutting wires or cables will place nicks and dull spots on the blade's edge and resharpening is probably needed after a day spent cutting phone wires or picture hanging wire.
E) There is no way to disassemble the knife for thorough cleaning. Usually however a spray of hot water can be used to flush debris out of the channels.
