That Beeb again.....

radio stories so interesting, I'm missing out on sleep. So, this debate over endless growth (Economic, population), in the face of limited space and resources. As usual, it's much more nuanced than either side admits. Thesis, antithesis, synthesis.....the ancient Greeks knew.

We're being prepped to accept the dramatic cull of population. First to hate and fear all 'outsiders' so that we are relieved when they are exterminated. Then to mock and resent the elderly, so we are quiescent when they are terminated.

Economic growth, sorted, and most drains on it removed. Tick.
Population, tick.

What fools we mortals be but fortunately, once the them-and-us lines have been properly marked out, how relieved we fools will feel.
It doesn't take much effort to get people to dislike the consequences of over population. Crowded roads and streets with frequent gridlock, and never ending roadwork. Traffic signals stopping you at every intersection. Parks, and especially national parks too crowded to enjoy. Long waiting lines at the doctor or any type of health care. Most people being forced to live closer and closer to each other, and little to no hope of the situation ever improving, unless you are rich. All this and the people who benefit financially from it, pushing for more and more of it. Yes the debate will go on.
Well, current world demographic maximum population guestimates, as with climate change, sea water level increases, and other data based mostly on computer mega models of "data", are in. These range between a low of 7.3 Billion souls for father Earth to carry, to just under 10 large. So these researchers are saying Malthusian logistic, let alone exponential, increases won't ever come, which goes along with the many known limiting factors on human population growth. Done well, these numbers probably can be fed, housed and provided with water and hygiene. But the point of my post was more about the rank consumerism driven by the "need" for constant economic growth, however defined.

Tighten the borders, restrain the moneylenders. The West doesn't need choice we need priority, things are too cheap and easy(unless they're important). It's the rest who need choice. We should absolutely support feminism in India.
OK, CC. Feminism on the sub continent? Perhaps. I went to school with the husbands of a few ladies from that interesting place, and more gracious and lovely women would be hard to find. This was in Mexico, where decent food was dirt cheap at the time. But during these times, I shamelessly played the starving bachelor, and was invited to dinner at Pakistani and Indian homes. Food to die for, and wonderful children. Sadly, no unattatched sisters or maiden aunts. So almost half a century later, here I am sniffing about on CS. What's wrong with this picture?
Won't be a problem... we're at the edge of extinction.

See? YOU should volunteer for neutering to make way for MY superior genes. Then within a decade, these super-men will be fighting each other for living space, jobs, water, air etc. Don't knock Progress!
All doom and gloom. The media make a meal of everything.

We have unfortunately had recent wars killing thousands in different people's

We have had killing weathers that have obliterated whole communities.

I have travelled from one end of my country to the other, plenty of space.

I toured Southern Ireland same as .

Croatia, Malta, Spain same as.

Maybe conservation for future generations, managing land better for housing etc.

And of course exploration of the planets grin

Maybe build bigger space stations generating own community and food. All in the future.

I do not believe media anymore nor politicians, or researchers all narrow in the mind.

Teach our kids to think outside the box, we will be amazed what can come forward with that.

Thinking on the dark side will depress you grin teddybear
