Shuttering the Prison at Guantanamo: an Internatio
According to the Chicago Tribune, no decisions have been made in regards to the detainees. Throughout Obama’s campaign he emphasized the importance of closing the doors on the facility. But Obama’s foreign policy adviser McDonough prefers to wait until national security & legal teams are in place before proceeding. There are rumors of a plan being crafted to try the accused in the US in some jury rigged court. No decision will be forthcoming from Obama any time soon, according to the Associated Press. In the meantime, prisoners being held at Guantanamo, regardless of the accusations against them, do not exist as human beings under the “suspected enemy combatant” provision, imposed & up held by the “unconstitutional” Supreme Court ruling. Again, the Constitution is quite clear on this matter: no one is to be denied life & liberty without Due Process. Hello. That means no one is to be held without a trial & a great deal more. But, how is one to know the law as it pertains to the Bill of Rights when those who have received a “schooling” rather than a proper “education” don’t have a “clue” as to how the law is to be interpreted? It often feels hopeless in the face of such ignorance. Obama wants to put a lid over the whole prison. He doesn’t want the stories those folks have to tell being aired in the light of day. Shuttered is, indeed, the right word.
Those prisoners, those non-existent human beings, will not be tried in any civilized, civilian court. Any such proposals will be rejected by the Bush family, who insists that the facility is necessary to “preserve national security” & to “prevent the disclosure of classified documents,” which would expose many members of Congress & human Rights activists as traitors. Who are the “real” terrorists! Clearly, Gauntanamo has become the ‘international symbol for the abuse of American power.’
