My English

I can say that life is good to me. But the thing is I found myself surrounding by hard people and it makes the life harder to me.

I got complained by one of my Indonesian new manager here that my written English is poor. It's okay for me since I'm not shame. English is not my native language. At least I have never been complained by my foreign clients and I'm the one at office who handle the foreign clients and never have communication problem.

The matters is that she talked in front of my staffs with a high tone and seems like my written all is a mistake. It's annoying to me.

I'm not a person who made from stone. I'm opened for good and improving advices. The matters is how you tell the advice to people. The way, not to make people down and lose face.

I heard people complaining and complaining here and I just keep quiet and close my ears but today I got my complaining. Sounds like a good way to begin a new day in an early morning.

There was a phone call to my private cellphone just now from one of my clients. Another Singaporean company asked me to look for someone who want to work in Medan but can speak English like me.

Now I'm raising my shoulder and take a deep breath remember about the words my new manager told me this early morning. At least someone appreciate my English. I personally never think it's poor.

Dear Summer, Just tell your boss that he is right and he needs to hire a secretary for you so your English will be written perfectly . Tell him that you will start enterviewing prospects immediatly . Ask him also what salary range he is willing to pay for this expertise . i think it will shut him up for a while . . . .laugh laugh
@ Frank : Don't argue too much. I know I'm not good in arguing. If I talk to much, I will get trouble since the power is not in my hand. Unfortunately I can only share it here to feel more free.

PS : I guess she also didn't know how to advice about the written English. If not, she could give her opinion about the better one.
Hi Bunny! dancing
@ 2starlover : Hi carrot! dancing
Give me her number and I will tell her off for you.
Hi Summer,
Do not worry, some peoples are nonsense and crazy due to their nature and Family Back ground even they do not know some times how to talk with peoples and how to respect others. Go ahead and try to find out your lack. Time will come to your hand and you will be WIN!

Take care Summer!
I have read your written English summer and i personality think its good. Maybe its not your written English that's the problemgrin maybe its your boss eyesightgrin grin laugh
@ 2sratlover, Hafiz, Sweet : She was just got the promotion and now actually she is the top manager here in my office. Her TOEFL is 600 and I can say she has high IQ but unfortunately she might have to effort more for her EQ.

Well, I will keep patience until I found a new better job. After that I can say "Bye".
Honestly, I would give your English about a 90% out of 100. I think the important questions is, if the people you write to can understand you, and if they are satisfied with your level of English... From a business perspective. I would definitely say it is NOT "poor".
@ 2star : Thank you! hug
Dont worry Summer, on writing, you can always work to improve on it if you want to. There are people that only speak English or one language and even they are not so correctly written in their own language. As for your situation, with time.. you're situation can only get better and better... because it is YOU and your personality that customers/people will like relating to. Just my opinion. grin
@ Robrt : Hi! wave

Nice to see you here because I always think that your comments make sense. {smile}

I tried my best to wrote what in my mind and tried to figure something out and far from misstatement. But anyway, she wanted more than that. A basic one and she asked me to look at Google to look for another Companies' figure. It won't same, trust me, because one company's situation is different with another. I wonder why she didn't want to give any advice about the better one?
Hi again Summer.. ME? Making sense? lol. Anyway, in my past I have worked to help amateur actors, speakers, tv reporters and just helping people get over shy of audiences and cameras...etc. When I managed, I would always compliment the worker or person on the good things they did, and then tell them all can be even better with just a tune up of this or that. I would never yell or belittle them or threaten them.. that gets the worker, the manager and the company NOWHERE. Everyone, managers included need to work together, help each other to achieve best results. Again, just my opinion.cool
I have understood everything u ever wrote to me!!!!wave
@ Callio : Thank you! hug

Hi Bonita! reunion

Well, I can say the things we can do to improve our English is reading more English book (notice the grammar), listening to TV or DVD and tried not to see the translation text, and of course talk to native person. I still work on it and do blogging to improve my courage in English, both writing and talking {smile}

Summer ~ wave wine count yourself lucky, you're not in SA! Here we have 11 official languages! That aside, I respect anyone that goes out of their way to learn a new language, so kudos to you. handshake hug
But today, you have great assistance from the programs (Microsoft, Linux or others), that you may use in that most of them have an auto correct feature, you can activate, within the program - so that your written content is automatically corrected for spelling, punctuation and grammar. I'm sure if you look on the net you'll find more great tutorials. Good luck! thumbs up
Summer,

I think a manager has nothing against your English, I think she appreciates the fact you are fluent, I think she expects more formal writing style, formal business expressions, passive voice, grammar and layout. All, which is possible to learn in couple of weeks, because you can find a lot of inputs from the Internet websites which are available and help all non- natives and as well native speakers to improve " office formal writing".

What I am a bit surprised is her a bit unprofessional approach to you. To complaint in front of other co-workers about your writing skills is unprofessional, she is not your tutor and you are not a pupil ( even at educational institutions we do not do so!)
If she had something, she could ask you to follow her to he roffice and she could tell you that face to face.

Summer, all the best and enjoy your time and your working day. Improvement is a part of our lives and I am sure, you love being better and better hug bouquet bouquet
You're english is better then mine at writing, me im good spokeing but hey don't worry how many people will love to be so fluent like you are. wink

That manager maybe he just try find something wrong to ruine your day. All he got was that, don't put that to your soul just ignor him and you focus of your work and do a good one.

wave
Don't worry Summertan. Plenty of supposedly 'native' English speaking people make a right old mess of the English language. My boss was born and raised in London (East End) and his level of English ability is terrible. He is a good Engineer but seems incapable of stringing words together to make a proper sentence. I would suggest that your English is technically better than his.

Don't lose heart. I know how some managers can be. She is just trying to assert her new-found authority and the only way she knows how to do it is try to make someone else feel bad. No people skills at all.
@ Becca : I will try it once. hihi.

@ Elmorya : Hi, El, and thanks for Kudos me! hug

Uh, you'r kidding me! 11 official languages! Wow! Do you know all, El?

Well, the thing happened this morning is not vocabulary mistaken. It's the sentences she wanted me to make. More official, she said, while mine was taken by her as not official. I wonder since I have use official grammar.
@ Aswina : Hi, Aswina! hug

Yes, you got my point. She can told me so directly. I will more appreciate it.

Thank you for being so understanding! hug

@ Lazly : Hi, dear! You are so sweet. Your comment makes me smile. {smile} I don't think that mine is so good but definitely it's not poor. hehe

What I notice in your comments, your written is good! With lots of reading English books I think it will improve it to be better. I do it also. So, fighting! wink
Hi there Summer. I must say your English is very good. But there is a difference between being understood and being correct. There are mistakes in your written English, which, if it was to be dissected by a native English speaker, could appear unprofessional. Remember you are representing your company when you communicate externally. Please don't shoot me, I am speaking as devil's advocate here.

There are two aspects to this. First, was your boss correct in the essence of what she said? As I mentioned above, that is possibly true. Second, was she correct in the manner she said it? Absolutely not. The irony is that a few grammatical errors will be understood and can be corrected. A personality like hers cannot.

I would suggest that when you correspond with native English speakers on here you ask them to be brutal with you, and correct any mistakes you make. Thats the only way to learn and put the mistakes to bed.
@ Scarlet : Hi! reunion

Well, if that's the matter than maybe I have to smile this along day. haha. Btw, it's already riot here regarding to the increase of fuel price. I hope you are safe there and okay. Take care! hug

@ Rubicon76 : Hello! {smile}

Oh, your London boss English is terrible? Wow, it's hard to believe! He might be a shy person.

Yes, I wonder why managers seems like having same managing style. An annoying one. Thanks for support me {smile} wink hug
Hi Silverlining! wave

haha. yes, I know some of the writing might be not too professional. I'm okay with the correction because that is the reports I do day by day. So now correction will actually the same as tomorrow.

I can learn from notice and read so I might be better later. {smile} Just don't tell me in brutal way laugh Sounds scary!
