Best place in winter?

So, if I wanted sun, neighbours with English as first or second language, affordability, not too long a flight from UK, where would I buy? I like the idea of Spain but speak no Spanish and not very good at learning languages.

Also - city, town or village? House or apartment? Year round, or winter?

Yes I am picking your brains! cool

I assume you already ruled out Gibraltar or Germany?
I've just returned from Spain. Inland Spain would be my choice and the language is the easiest to learn and pronounce. The South may be too hot and the North too wet so do your homework and make sure you get a pool which isn't too expensive to keep in Spain.

I would only live in the country or a small town with a garden but that may not be to your taste. banana
I would also think about the Azores.
Is Germany hot enough? and I don't speak German either blues but no, haven't ruled out anywhere yet. Gibralter is a great suggestion, thanks!
Rain, useful stuff. Main concern is that if I do have to return to the UK in a hurry, (older relatives here) I dont give myself too far to go. I have to be within an hour of a good airport I think

And yes, a garden for the cat laugh
Ken, the Azores just sounds expensive! but so exotic dancing
wave As you are a Brit, Spain is the best place I've heard,
plus it's ok not speaking to anyone for a few months.laugh
Oh Pedal the way I heard it the Spanish are more stubborn about speaking English than anywhere else?
I went to Florida last year on holiday and loved it but the flights were a KILLER, had to change planes and wait for hours between. (Fort Lauderdale)
If you're thinking about Spain in winter forget about "inland" professor laugh If you want a garden in Gib hope you are very comfortably off laugh also Gib is on the pilots top ten worst airports to land at uh oh wow wine
CS I certainly didn't find that. Just go with a little bit of basic Spanish and they will soon come to your rescue?
And THAT, Z, is exactly why I am asking. No-one else tells you these things!
Rain when you say you came back, from a holiday? Or living there?
I know someone who lives there not far from Allicante near the mountains and I was only visiting. Catalonia is my favourite place to be but the entire coast is taken up with tourism or industry these days.

Jaca in the Pyrenees is a great old and friendly town but cold in winter.
Seville has a good climate and there are plenty of towns in that area.
After 40 years of occupation a heck of lot of Germans speak excellent English, also we still have soldiers and their families living there. Not as many as before 2000, but still thousands of them along with many shopkeepers who speak this devil tongue. laugh
Rain, thanks, good suggestions. Cold in winter is 15 degrees centrigrade? or minus temperatures? rolling on the floor laughing
The Canary islands might be cool place for the winter ?
James, friend of mine just back from the Canaries and really enjoyed herself. Have you been? She did say property in the area she stayed (I think in Las Americas, if that is a place) was very expensive.
No I have not been to the Canry islands but my dauther was there ,

Another cool place is Goa in India , or Barbados only both places have a long flying time to get there. I think all winther holidays with sun are expensive,

Maybe you could look at the last minutes flight deals..
Best place in Winter"..The Man yelled out and cried........They all answered ..."Any Place but Outside"..........detective
laugh You could come to Canada and experience a real Winter.
Southern Spain is mild in winter. You would have to stay near the coast, in touristic areas, if you don't speak Spanish.

It is only polite to at least learn basic Spanish though.

You are in Their country. If they came to yours, you would expect them to learn some English.
Hi Cosy
The language should not be a problem in Spain. Simply add an 'Ole' to every English sentence and it will give it a true Spanish touch.
grin hug wave
I think is too long but in Brazil the sun shines all the time.Good luck, hope you find a good place to relax.
Ha Pedal, been there, done that! And I do love snow. As I get a bit older, not as much as I did.
Molly, yes, you are quite right. Although the flood of Spaniards rushing to holiday in England is, well, more of a trickle. I admire the Spanish very much but they don't really care that their tourists are mainly English, French and German. Compare that to the Netherlands, where even the children seem to speak 4 languages from birth!
Ha, Cat, I also do the famous English standby. Speak louder and slower until they stop pretending they don't speak God's own language. Our refusal to learn languages has made English the first or second language of the western world.
Cris, if only. Yes, Brazil is too far. But the day that teleporter gets invented ...
