International Pi Day (Century Wide)

Nope, not a misspelling at all. Today is the one day of this century where the date equals pi. 31415 or March 14, 2015. OK, OK, OK …. Maybe not so significant in this day of high technology of laptop this and hard drive that, not to mention all the other gizmo’s, but when you look at it and what Pi represents, it is doubtful that we would have come as far as we have had it not been discovered. Now, if you really want to get a bit more precise, the celebration won’t start until 9:26 and a half tonight …. Yeah, that is 314159265 to be more precise. Of course you could do as some and take it out to one million digits and if you wonder what that looks like just check where it’s listed and you can get everything Pi. Personally, I think I’ll just get the t-shirt, maybe the coffee mug too (I’m a sucker for both of those).

Now Pi still have a few followers. There are video’s and songs, even a Pi Rap by Amy McConnel. If you look around you can see examples of every day, everywhere and frankly, without it groups like our Order of the Masonic Lodge would be a few digits short of a perfect world. Oh yeah, and if you like some of those neat “conspiracy theory” things just look at Pi (3.14) in the mirror … it spells PIE! Woooah, wonder if that means the zombie’s are coming early this year? And for the hackers in the readership just remember that 3.14159 x 1337% = 42 of which the significance is …. I have no idea.

So, don’t forget to celebraite. You can bake your favorite Pie that is decorated with Pi and other related things, you can try composing your own song, even do a bit of crafts, cross-stitch or if you’re lazy like I am just buy some Pi crafts from Etsy at (more great t-shirts there too and a spanking great pair of flip-flops too! They even have a great mug titled “cutie Pi”.

Truly I am stunned that the Cupcake Queen is not embracing, and did not even advertise, a day named after a sweet.

PIe Day

I am told even the Green Lantern Corp like this day.

The ancient Babylonians calculated the area of a circle by taking 3 times the square of its radius, which gave a value of pi = 3. One Babylonian tablet (ca. 1900–1680 BC) indicates a value of 3.125 for pi, which is a closer approximation.

The Rhind Papyrus (ca.1650 BC) gives us insight into the mathematics of ancient Egypt. The Egyptians calculated the area of a circle by a formula that gave the approximate value of 3.1605 for pi.

The first calculation of pi was done by Archimedes of Syracuse (287–212 BC), one of the greatest mathematicians of the ancient world. Archimedes knew that he had not found the actual value of pi but only an approximation within those limits. In this way, Archimedes showed that pi is between 3 1/7 and 3 10/71.
Ken, I'm busy eating cupcakes!!! snooty snooty snooty

Nom...Nom...Nom....giggle giggle giggle wave
On the lighter side, here's some more pi stuff:

Simple Simon met a pieman going to the fair;
Said Simple Simon to the pieman "Let me taste your ware"
Said the pieman to Simple Simon "Show me first your penny"
Said Simple Simon to the pieman "Sir, I have not any!"

Sing a song of sixpence a pocket full of rye,
Four and twenty blackbirds baked in a pie.
When the pie was opened the birds began to sing,
Oh wasn't that a dainty dish to set before the king?
