These were my tributes to those who served. All in all, the threads were well received. I was particularly interested in the input from those who'd served in Africa. I had wanted to, but opted for U.S. Marines instead.

Once again, none of these are about me, but as a tribute to Those Who Served.

You know, the Germans have a song to sing over the fresh grave of their fallen comrades, "ich hatt' einen Kamaraden.' On the Merc Music blog, there is a song to the fallen heroes of the SADF's Three-Two Battalion ('Lest We Forget"), but I cannot think of one the U.S. military has, aside from the playing of Taps and a rifle salute.

As far as I know, we have no song.

There is the final scene in SAVING PRIVATE RYAN, that seems fitting.

Private Ryan, now an old man, surrounded by his family, and visiting the graves of those who died to save him, turns to his loved ones, and wonders if he has lived a life worthy of those who gave theirs.

That is the question we should ask ourselves.

That is a very good humbling question of which few will go there.

The drill instructor of a Marine buddy, in Vietnam era, didn't like bigly someone calling their rifle a gun. He had several ways of putting a quick stop to it.
